It's been nearly a week since the Henry County school board voted on a controversial consolidation plan.
Beginning next fall, three middle schools are scheduled to close and the number of high schools will be reduced from four to two.
Students are already thinking about next year, but not in the way the school board would like. [***NEWS 7 @ 6 MB GRAPHIC***]

This is probably Latoya Wilson's last year as a member of the Laurel Park marching band.
In fact, it may be her last year in any Henry County school.

And she's not alone.
Martinsville has already received numerous transfer requests but reportedly can only take up to 100 new students next year.
Some have also contacted the Pittsylvania County school system but how many transfers it can take next year is yet to be determined.

It will cost a Henry County resident more than 13-hundred dollars to send their child to Pittsylvania County schools.

In Martinsville, tuition is free.
Even so, administrators warn transferring to a new school system can be costly.

If you're looking to transfer your son or daughter to Pittsylvania County, you must first fill out an application.
That deadline is August 15th.

A prominant Fincastle man has died after his car was hit by a train this morning.

State Police responded to the accident shortly after 9:30 at the Second Avenue crossing. Witnesses say 78 year old George P. Moore Junior met an oncoming van on the single-lane gravel road, and backed up to make way. He then backed up onto the railroad tracks, and into the path of an oncoming train. Moore was taken to Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he died about an hour later of internal injuries. State Police say the train did blow its whistle, and was travelling under the forty-mile-an-hour speed limit.

The bill increases benefits for surviving spouses of railroad retirees by about 300 dollars a month.
It also cuts payroll taxes for rail companies and allows workers with 30 years of service to retire at age 60 instead of 62.
The House and Senate gave their approval earlier this month, but the White House says because of world events the President has not yet been able to sign the bill.

A Microsoft officials say Windows XP contains serious flaws that can allow hackers to seize control of all the operating system software. All the computer user has to do is connect to the internet. The flaws were discovered more than a month ago, just two weeks after the company sold more than seven million copies of Windows X-P. Today, Microsoft released a free fix for both the home and professional editions.

The five foot seven point guard led Glenvar to its second state title in the last five years as the Highlanders beat 3 Rivers district rival Radford at the Salem Civic Center.
The Sophomore led the Highlanders to a 27 and 2 record she averaged 13 points and 4 assists a game during the regular season.

They've taken down the help wanted sign at Virginia Tech.
Kevin Rogers, who served as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Notre Dame the past three seasons, is the Hokies new quarterback coach.
Rogers replaces Ricky Bustle, who resigned last week to accept the head coaching job at Louisiana-Lafayette.
Rogers is no stranger to the commonwealth he is a 1974 graduate of William and Mary. He coached Donovan McNabb at Syracuse for three seasons. He begins his duties in January.

The score was tied 3 to 3 then Pittsburgh's David Priestly goes to the air and hits Antonio Bryant on the 15 yard T-D pass to make it 10 to 3 Panthers.
Then in the second quarter Priestly goes up top again and hits Bryant this time on the 2 yard T-D pass to make it 17 to 3 in the second quarter.

The Wolfpack would get on the board in the second quarter Greg Golden scoops up the kickoff and he's off to the races taking it 90 yards for the score and Pittsburgh goes on to win it 34 to 19.

Two members ofThe Roanoke Express will play in the East Coast Hockey League's All star game.
Roanoke Wingers Rick Kowalsky and Vern Fiddler were chosen by the Northern Conference head coaches to play in the 2002 all star game.
Kowalksy, who was chosen as a starter, is Roanoke's leading scorer with 18. He also leads the team with 7 power play goals.
Fiddler is second on the Express with 26 points. He has had 10 of those points in the last five contests.
