Three children are found dead after an early- morning fire strikes their home just outside Chicago.

Firefighters found all three children in upstairs bedrooms.
The mother and two OTHER children were able to get out of the house safely.
They were taken to the hospital, but their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

When smoke obscures their vision, firefighters turn to thermal imaging cameras for help.
Roanoke County is now making progress in its effort to outfit all of its stations with the technology.

But the device can help firefighters search a smoke-filled room, find the source of a fire, and see when a structure is about to collapse.

It would cost 214- billion dollars over five years.
The bill extends some unemployment benefits, and gives states money to cover health care costs.

They're protesting the nation's economic policies.
Unemployment has topped 18- percent, and the country's been trapped in a four- year recession.

One demonstrator said people are fed up with hunger and poverty, and they're ready to kick out government officials.

Part of a shopping mall roof has collapsed in South Africa -- reportedly over an area crowded with children.
The partial collapse happened at a shopping center north of the capital city of Pretoria.
Radio reports say at least 35 people were hurt when the roof fell over an ice rink.
About 50 others -- mostly children -- are said to be trapped under the rubble.
South African police and soldiers are joining in the rescue effort.

A head on collision in Salem last night sends two Roanoke College students to the hospital.

Police say Mary Cunney ran a red light at the intersection of Electric Road and Keagy Road striking another car head- on. Cunney and a passenger were taken to Roanoke Memorial. Police say the two Roanoke College students suffered serious injuries.
The driver of the other car was also hurt---though not as seriously.

Authorities say charges are pending against Cunney.

More than a billion dollars in the hole, Governor Jim Gilmore is digging himself out with a final budget that promises to leave everyone unhappy.

State workers would get a pay raise, but college tuitions could go up.. and Gilmore stands firm on not raising taxes and getting rid of the car tax by 2004.
Gilmore's last day is January 12th.. legislators will then have the task of enacting his cuts or coming up with a solution of their own.

For the first time since September 11th, tourists are arriving on Liberty island, the home of the Statue of Liberty.
100 days have passed since the terrorist attacks, and both Liberty Island and Ellis Island have been closed since then.

Just after 9 oclock this morning, the first boat of tourists arrived at Liberty Island. Dignitaries like Secretary of Interior Gale Norton greeted the first visitors to come to the island since the September 11th attacks.

But there will be changes. The Statue still is not yet open to visitors. Tourists will be able to walk around it, but not climb up into it until sometime next year. And visitors to both Liberty and Ellis islands will now have to go through strict security checkpoints before boarding the boats to go to the islands in New York and New Jersey.

Tazewell County officials say the theft of road signs is becoming a huge problem.
The county's 9-1-1 center is working to replace about 500 signs that have been stolen or vandalized .
The Board of Supervisors wants state legislators to make the destruction, or theft of a road sign a felony.
The county's 9-1-1 director believes road signs have become tickets for admission to certain teen-agers' parties.
