State police are investigating a deadly confrontation between a Pittsylvania County man and a Chatham police officer.

A town police officer and a county deputy went to the house to charge 31-year-old James Elvin Wood in a domestic dispute.
Police say Wood lunged at the officers with a knife, cutting the hand of Chatham Sargeant Wayne Mayhew.
Mayhew shot him once in the chest. Wood died at the scene.
Chatham's Mayor says it was self-defense. But he's placed Sargeant Mayhew on paid leave.

Professionals have tried to solve the puzzle for the last century.
The code was written in three pages of numbers by Thomas Beale, who allegedly buried the treasure.
Legend places the twenty million dollar treasure somewhere at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Bedford County.

Next year that already ultra-tough district will expand to eleven teams as Cave Spring and the new Hidden Valley high school join the existing nine members.

As a result, the district steering committee chaired by Lord Botetourt principal Alan Brenner has decided to split the district into two divisions for the next school year.
The split is based on enrollment numbers with these, the six most populated schools, in one division.
