After throwing a piece of concrete through the front glass, Bullington says the man went straight for a mail-box deposit slot, which is used to store cash for just a few hours at the time. On Christmas night, the only holiday the Texas Tavern is closed, the box and the cash register were empty. Except for the socks on his hands, the man first went away empty handed, but came back a few minutes later and successfully got the safe.

Martinsville police have arrested a suspect in the Christmas break-in and vandalism at Liberty Fair Mall.
Officers arrested 19 year old Julius Larosa Chaney of Martinsville last night.
Chaney's charged with eight felonies and four misdemeanors including breaking and entering and grand larceny

A bank in southeast Roanoke was robbed this afternoon.

Police say a man held up the First National Exchange Bank on 9th Street around lunchtime.
He had covered his face with a cloth or his shirt, and stuck his hand in a pocket as if he had a gun.
The teller gave him an undisclosed amount of money, and he ran off.

An announcement made today in Roanoke may save taxpayers a good chunk of change.
The state plans to allocate several million dollars in bonds to help finance the biomedical Institute.

A truck carrying food to the Homestead overturned this morning, killing a man.

The accident happened about eight thirty on Route 220 near Hot Springs.
Witnesses say the driver of the Maryland based truck ran off the road and hit a tree.
He then swerved back into the road and the truck flipped.
The impact crushed the cab of the truck, killing the driver.
The truck's cargo of fruits and vegetables spilled across the highway, backing up traffic while VDOT cleaned up the mess.

The man who lost the Republican nomination to take on Mark Warner will be part of the Democrat's administration.
He'll be an assistant to the governor for Commonwealth preparedness, coordinating efforts to protect the state from terrorism.
Hager won't be a member of Warner's cabinet, but he will take part in its meetings.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that among those mentioned are two graduates of the school: retired General Binford Peay the Third and Lieutenant General Robert Flowers, head of the U-S Army Corps of Engineers.
Non-alumni names include former Navy secretary James Webb, Anthony (Zin-ee) Zinni, a part-time V-M-I instructor who has served as a U-S special envoy to the Middle East and retired General Wesley Clark.

In a practice that is commonplace among college programs that respect each other, but don't usually compete against one another - Florida State's coaching staff spent a weekend in Blacksburg in the spring. The FSU coaches weren't just given an open door policy, but also an open play book.
