Instead, gun fire was exchanged, killing the soldier from San Antonio Texas... and wounding a CIA agent. Gen. Tommy Franks, Central Command: "This American serviceman was doing his job. He was out for the purpose of working with and coordinating with tribal leaders in that area." The gun battle happened near the town of gardiz it is the same area where for two days American F-18s and heavy bombers have pounded a known al queda compound. although several u-s soldiers have been killed during this campaign... this is the first by 'enemy fire'. The CIA officer is expected to survive. It was back in November when another CIA operative, Mike Spann, was killed when al-Qaida prisoners revolted at a prison in Mazar-e-Sharif. Franks: I am mindful... important campaign. Meanwhile the search for Osama bin Laden and Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar intensifies. The intelligence chief for Kandahar tells CBS News that Omar has been wounded and that local intelligence teams will soon capture him. A defense official says the country has agreed to turn over the former taliban ambassador to Pakistan. The message says "Usama bin laden the murderer and coward has abandoned you."
It's just one of many leaflets being dropped in Afghanistan.
Among the leaflets dropped in the past.... included ones that warned villagers not to shelter Al queda or Taliban members.

A new study says there's NO need to bar Virginia drivers from using cell phones.
The report by George Mason Univeristy -- suggests that all distractions cause drivers to crash -- whether they're rubbernecking, eating or putting on makeup.
Lawmakers have begun considering restrictions on drivers using cellphones, such as allowing only hands-free phones.
The report finds that things happening outside of cars, such as wrecks, distract drivers more than anything else.

Nine-year old Stacy Glick died after the Jeep Cherokee she was riding in slid off Waterlick Road around two p-m Thursday.
Police say 32-year old Linda Ann Glick lost control on the snow-covered road and skidded into oncoming traffic.
Glick's car was hit broadside by a van driven by 53-year old Louis B. Cincinelli (sin-sin-ELL-ee) of Bedford County.
Police say speed was not a factor in the accident.

A Huddleston woman died this morning after a weather-related accident in Bedford County. 89-year-old Hessie Payne Howell died when the car she was riding in hit a patch of ice on Smith Mountain Lake Parkway and slid off the road into a tree. It happened shortly after eleven. The Mercury Tracer was driven by Howell's daughter in law, Margaret Grey Howell- She was taken to Bedford Memorial Hospital with head injuries.

He inherited the Guiness Book of Records title in December of 2000- after an American man died at age 111.
Todde credited his long life to a glass of red wine every day.

He left his native island just once- to serve in the military in World War One.

The Florida Gators are looking for a head coach after losing Steve Spurrier.

But many believe that Spurrier has resigned to make himself available for an N-F-L head coaching Job.
The Gators won the National championship in 1996, 6 S-E-C titles and as many as 10 games 9 times in Spurrier's 12 years at the school.
His 122 victories at Florida ranks as the best win total in history for a major college coach in his first 12 years at the school.

(( This will be the first recruiting period for the Hokies with newly appointed recruiting coordinator Jim Cavanaugh running the show. The 28 year college coaching veteran is well known and well respected from one end of the state to the other. ((JIM CAVANAUGH:)) Tech's newest staff member, quarterbacks' coach Kevin Rogers, will also be out of the recruiting trail. He also has plenty of evaluating to do in the coming months before spring ball. Tech returns five quarterbacks next season in Grant Noel, backup Bryan Randall - who may move to defense, third string signal caller Jason Davis, and two more freshmen who were redshirted this year in Chris Clifton and Will Hunt. Add a couple of likely incoming freshmen recruits and things are suddenly very overcrowded. Stacy Compton has picked up a ride for the Winston Cup Season.

The 34 year old Compton will drive the Conseco Pontiac owned by racing legend A.J. Foyt.
Compton received a one year contract with Foyt.
He will also run a full Busch Series season in 2002. Compton joined Winston Cup in 2-thousand after 3 years in the Craftsman Truck Series.
