Democrat Mark Warner recited the oath of office under sunny skies, and called on Virginians to put aside partisan differences.
His speech won favorable reviews from Democrats and Republicans, but Joe Dashiell reports, it also left the audience wanting more.

Grayson County authorities have arrested a Trout Dale man on charges that he killed his three-year-old son.
Officials say Roland Shane Griffith is charged with second-degree murder and felony abuse and neglect of Dorian Zahir Cox.
The boy died August 31st at a hospital after falling down a wooden stairway.

Police say excessive speed lead to an accident on Main Street in Roanoke tonight.

According to police, the driver of this Hyundai was travelling on Brandon Avenue and tried to turn onto Main street.
It then hit the curb, and flipped over several times.
Police say two people fled the scene after the accident, including the driver.
Nobody was injured, and police say charges are pending.

The Roanoke Fire Department held a training exercise in which firefighters had to respond to a report of a fire on the 12th floor.

A private study shows asbestos levels in lower Manhattan are nine times higher than federal and state officials have claimed.

"The St- Louis Post- Dispatch" is also reporting the cancer risk from exposure to asbestos is much higher following the collapse of the World Trade Center.
The private researchers found nine asbestos fibers for every one
that was detected by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Those who worked on the study used state-of-the-art methods while government scientists who've reported lower levels of aspestos had used older methods.

Authorities say alcohol was a factor in a shooting in Botetourt County.

Sheriff's Deputies responded to a home on Narrow Passage Road just after seven o'clock last night.
They arrived to find 47-year old William Clayton Sanders Jr. dead from a single gun shot wound to the chest.
Deputies have arrested Victor Loyd Rycroft and charged him with first degree murder.
The shooting happened at Rycroft's residence in Eagle Rock.

Two months ago, hard economic times and competition from mega movie plexes forced the Grandin to close.
