Two month's before the company's collapse, its president told employees business was never better.

Enron's collapse happened under the watchful eye of Arthur
Andersen...the auditing firm that was SUPPOSED to ensure Enron's
financial statements were accurate. As it turns out, those statements
overstated profits for four years and concealed more than a billion
dollars in losses and debt.
The law requires public companies like Enron to hire accountants like
Andersen to check the books and watch out for shareholders' interests.
But critics say the accountants have gotten too cozy with the companies;
doubling as "consultants and advisers."
(GRAPHIC/2000)
In 2000, Enron paid Arthur Andersen $25 million in auditing fees...
and even more--27 million--for non-auditing services like tax advice and
consulting.
(SOT-ELI GOTTESDIENER, ENRON EMPLOYEES' ATTORNEY)
SO YOU HAD ARTHUR ANDERSEN IN A HOPELESSLY CONFLICTED POSITION; THEY'RE
IN A DIRECT CONFLICT OF INTEREST.
(wall street pix)
HALF of the revenue for the Big Five accounting firms now comes from
consulting. Critics say it's one reason why so many companies slip by
with incorrect financial reports that make them look better.
(graphic)
The SEC is investigating Xerox, which recently said three years of
earnings statements were incorrect, and fired its auditor KPMG. In the
past three years, 233 companies have corrected or revised previously
filed earnings. Major accounting firms have failed to flag serious
problems at Waste Management, Sunbeam, Rite Aid and Lucent.
(setup)
That's added up to huge losses for shareholders, according to Lynn
Turner, who was recently the nation's top accounting regulator.
(SOT-LYNN TURNER, FORMER SEC CHIEF ACCOUNTANT)
TOO MANY CASES I'VE SEEN WHEN I WAS AT THE SEC WHERE THE AUDITORS
ACTUALLY TURNED AROUND, IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM NO QUESTION THAT THEY SAW
THE PROBLEM, BUT THEN THEY TURNED AROUND AND STILL GAVE A CLEAN BILL OF
HEALTH.
(ATTKISSON CLOSE)
AS FOR WHO'S KEEPING THE AUDITORS HONEST...THE ANSWER IS EACH
OTHER...THROUGH PEER REVIEWS.
THE FIRM OF DELOITTE AND TOUCHE RECENTLY GAVE ARTHUR ANDERSEN A STAMP OF
APPROVAL, SAYING ITS AUDITS CAN BE TRUSTED. THAT WAS BEFORE THIS WEEK,
