Allegations of an unusual bank fraud scheme were made public today in federal court. When a bank branch in Maryland closed in 1997, the bank hired a company called Document Destructors to destroy American Express Money Orders the bank had left over. An indictment under seal since August charges: employees of Document Destructors took some of the money orders, along with blank checks from the Pentagon Credit Union. Eventually more than 10-thousand dollars worth of money orders were deposited in an account at the First National Bank of Blacksburg. The government says the account holder got 600-dollars out of the deal, and the rest went to those who took the checks.
