The Virginia Housing Development Authority's board has backed off from a proposal that would make gay couples eligible for low-interest home loans.
The V-H-D-A was set to vote today on a proposal to expand its single-family loan regulations. The rules currently restrict the joint purchase of a home to people related by blood, birth, marriage or custodial guardianship.
But it chose instead to consider an amendment that would provide loans for the disabled and elderly as well as single parents, but would exclude homosexuals from eligibility.
Governor Warner's chief of staff showed up at the packed meeting to present a letter urging the board to make same sex couples eligible for the loans.
