The Mirant (Mirr-ent) Corporation announced today it is canceling plans to build a 400-millon dollar natural gas plant in Danville.

The plant would have gone up just east of the airport in the Airside Industrial Park.
A spokesman for the company says the global recession, fallen energy prices, and the Enron collapse are the reasons behind the decision.
However, it's possible the plant could still be built.
Mirant says it will continue with the permit process and look for another buyer for the project.
City officials believe the plant will create jobs and generate several million dollars in tax revenue each year.

Hard economic times are forcing cutbacks at Elizabeth Arden.
Today, the company announced plans reduce its work force by ten percent and close one of its three distribution centers.
The company partly blames weak Christmas sales.
Elizabeth Arden is a manufacturer and marketer of beauty products.
No word yet on what the announcement means for the distribution center in Roanoke.

Governor Mark Warner will announce the expansion of an existing textile plant tomorrow.

The Halifax County Sheriff's Department has made more arrests in a Thanksgiving day murder.
Police arrested 25-year old William Wells and 19-year old Earl Clark Junior today.
They're both charged with first degree murder in connection with a shooting that killed Thomas Jackson at the American Legion Post 99 last November.
Four other people have already been arrested.

A standoff in Smyth County ended peacefully today.

It started just before noon near Marion.
Deputies say 29 year old David Wayne Richardson held his girlfriend and two small children at gunpoint for more than three hours.
The sheriff's Department said the incident stemmed for a domestic dispute but would not elaborate.
Richardson faces one charge of abduction and one charge of use of a firearm.
He is being held without bond at the Smyth County jail.

The health care organization wants to build a heart catheterization lab on the Carilion Campus in Roanoke as well as a surgery center for orthopedics and ear, nose and throat procedures near Tanglewood Mall.
Carilion says the facilities will accomodate increased patient need and open up hospital space.
The state must first approve the projects.
