V-DOT reports that many roads in the New River Valley are covered with snow and ice.
Road crews there will be plowing, sanding and salting throughout the night.
State police say there have been numerous accidents related to the weather, but nothing serious.
In the Wytheville district, which covers 15 Southwest Virginia counties, there were 71 fender benders.

A police spokesman says officers conducting school programs might carry a gun, but shouldn't pull it out.

Governor Warner has filled out the group that will take a top to bottom review of state government.
Two Southwest Virginians are on the Efficiency and Effectiveness Commission.
Tom Morris, the president of Emory and Henry College, and Tom Robertson, chairman of the Carilion Biomedical Institute, with work with former Governor Doug Wilder and ten others.
The commission will recommend ways to make state government more efficient by August first.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed a complaint, claiming WalMart subjected an African- American employee to a "racially hostile work environment." The Commission says Charles Aikens was subjected to "disparate disciplinary treatment." The E-E-O-C says Aikens was fired in retaliation for complaining about the work environment at the store in Radford.
It asks the court for an injunction against WalMart plus back pay and punitive damages for Aikens.

That's what his widow said, and U-S District Judge Sam Wilson re-iterated that conclusion today, denying the family's million dollar claim against the Veterans Administration. Ellis had visited the V-A Medical Center the day before his suicide, but his death came as a surprise to everyone, the judge said. "It was a sad and tragic story," Wilson said, but it was not the fault of the V-A doctors. Claudine Ellis left the courthouse today too emotional to make any comment, according to her lawyer.

Fire destroyed a home near Altavista this afternoon.

Volunteers from Altavista and (Glad-is) Gladys were called to this house on Gladys Road just before noon.
The home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.. it took them about twenty minutes to bring the fire under control.
No one was home when the blaze broke out.
Authorities believe it started in a bedroom.
The cause remains under investigation.

Jared White, the man who holds the all-time career reception mark in the state of Virginia confirmed that he is headed to Boston University. The Lord Botetourt star, who had 231 catches in his career signed a scholarship worth around $150 thousand dollars. White, who is also an excellent student plans to major in engineering. He also is an outstanding place kicker.
