The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company says it'll cut 35-hundred jobs this year after posting a more than 203-million dollar loss for 2001.
The loss is the company's first since 1992.
The cuts will include about 13-hundred workers at an Australian joint venture.
The rest will come from Goodyear facilities.
It's unclear how the plant in Southside will fare.
Last year, the Danville factory let close to 500-workers go.

The legislation would require girls younger than 18 to get a parent's permission before having an abortion.

From a little drop of blood we can tell you very early on whether or not you have the disease..and to tell you that before the disease has left the organ.
The technology was put to the test in a study to be published in the British Medical journal The Lancet: blood samples of 116 women were analyzed...50 had cancer...66 did not..the computer program correctly singled out all 50 women with ovarian cancer...

Early detection translates into survival rates...and that's really the name of the game here.
Ovarian cancer is one of deadliest because it is so difficult to find early enough to treat...31 year old Ana Del Rosario was diagnosed in April of 2001.

I had a pap smear in December and other tests..and everything came back normal The current test only has a fifty percent success rate...and Doctors are badly in need of a better tool:

That screening test would become standard of care and then women would be diagnosed with curable stages of ovary cancer and that would be an enormous advance.
In addition to the protein analysis approach...another test is also being developed that is able to detect ovarian cancer by measuring lipids...or fats in the blood.

Health officials say two people in Bedford County have contracted whooping cough... a highly contagious disease that's spread through sneezing and coughing.
The first case involves a 13 year old boy--the other a 77 year old woman.
They both had a connection to a small private school.

New concerns from the NTSB though, that rudders could be a problem on all planes because pilots may not be properly trained as to just how sensitive the rudders can be.
So the NTSB is calling on the F-A-A to re-train all pilots on rudder use- and because of September 11th - also re-train them on rudder maneuvers to prevent terrorist attacks on board.

The "E-Z pass" will be a voluntary biometric identification system like this one...

Botetourt County deputies say they've caught one of the so-called "boulder bandits "and have issued a warrant for another.
They say the two men are connected to a string of more than 20 robberies along Interstate 81 from Botetourt to Wythe Counties.
Deputies say the suspects first throw a large rock through a window or glass door, then crawl through the opening, usually to steal beer and cigarettes.
Samuel Clay Mitchell of Vinton is charged " two counts each" of breaking and entering and Grand Larceny.
Warrants have also been issued for a Roanoke man, but he has not been arrested yet.

According to police, McKenna got into the northbound lanes of 581 heading south .. at Orange Avenue nearly two months ago.
Police say she drove the wrong way for the better part of a mile before striking a northbound car with two adults and two children inside near Elm Avenue.

Roanoke wins it 82-to-73 as Martin Lewis leads five players in double figures with 16.

The Roanoke Express opened up a two game road swing last night in Charlotte by finally beating the Checkers. Mike Peron's goal with one second to play gave Roanoke the 3-to-2 win in regulation.
Tonight Roanoke is in Reading. The next home game is Tuesday against Greensboro.

Prior to today's first practice session for the at Daytona NASCAR inspectors confiscated several parts from a number of teams
Part of the exhaust system from Stacy Compton's A.J. Foyt Pontiac was taken.
But he was not alone. Ricky Rudd, Elliott Sadler in the Wood Brother Ford, three of Rick Hendrick's Cars including Jeff Gordon were busted for one thing or another.
Defending Daytona Champ Michael Waltrip also had several illegal pieces taken from his car.

An Ohio judge is using creative sentencing to teach a lesson.
Steven Thompson was sentenced to stand in his town square today.....

with a pig wearing a sign that says "this is not a police officer."
A judge came up with the punishment after Thompson called an officer a "pig" and made obscene gestures toward him in January.
However, Thompson's wife did not find the event humorous and says the judge is trying to boost his popularity.
Thompson spent two hours with the pig instead of three days in jail.
