The change will not go into effect until after today's second round of qualifying for the 500. In all, 22 drivers, representing last year's pole winners took part in the dash for cash. The race included a mandatory pit stop and different teams used different strategies. Rusty Wallace took on only two tires, and ran all by himself for a short time. It appeared that it would come down to Stewart, Dale Junior and Sterling Marlin.
But on the final lap, Jeff Gordon who started dead last, made a push to the front.
Stewart would win with Junior just nipping Gordon at the line for second place. It is Stewart's second straight Bud Shootout win.
