Southern California firefighters are trying to get the upper hand on a fast- moving blaze north of San Diego.

The wildfire has grown from 100 acres to more than three- thousand in a matter of hours-- mostly because of the gusty Santa Ana winds.
At least 16 homes have been damaged or destroyed so far.

No word on what caused the blaze.
Authorities say winter wildfires are unusual in Southern California, but this season's less-than-average rainfall could make it a long season for firefighters.

The county's school board recently voted on a controversial reconfiguration plan that would close and consolidate several schools.

But now the school's booster club is offering a bailout that could add up to more than a million dollars.
The boosters have proposed helping to fund the school system's projected deficit.
