DuPont began twelve years of cutbacks and layoffs in the mid 19-80's ..

Two K-Mart stores in our region are on a list of locations likely to close down later this year.

In bankruptcy court documents, K-Mart says it will sell the inventory of 291 unprofitable stores .. to save 250-million dollars a year. Stores in Radford and Madison Heights are on the list .. along with two others in Richmond and suburban Washington D.C.
A judge is scheduled to rule on that plan next month.
The Radford store's manager says he cannot comment on the closing and will not say how many people work there.

Judge Clifford Weckstein knocked three years off the 48-year sentence, reducing the time for possession of a firearm by a previously convicted juvenile.

Franklin County's director of public safety has been placed on unpaid administrative leave.
Today, a judge found Claude Webster guilty of brandishing a gun during an argument with another customer at a Roanoke Wendy's drive thru.
He was ordered to pay a 200 dollar fine and turn in his weapon.
In December, Roanoke resident Anita Peggins filed a complaint saying Webster threatened her with the gun.
Webster's attorney says he held the holstered gun up by the handle after Peggins approached his car, yelling.

A woman burned in a fire in Giles County last night has died.

The Rich Creek fire chief says Joyce Lockhart fell asleep while smoking, setting herself and a recliner on fire.
She had third degree burns over most of her body and was taken to the U-V-A medical center.
Officials say Lockhart died early this afternoon.
