Earlier today, a Moneta family escaped a house fire, thanks to a smoke detector.

At least a half-dozen fire companies responded to the blaze on Harvey's Creek Road around 4-30 a-m.
The fire is believed to have started in the basement.
The homeowner, Barrett Johnson, thinks an electrical problem may have ignited it, but fire officials are not yet naming the cause.
Two pets--a dog and a snake--died in the fire.
Officials say the house is a total loss.

A federal grand jury has indicted five Steelworkers union officials at the Intermet New River Foundry for allegedly misusing more than 20-thousand dollars in union funds .. and trying to cover it up.

Prosecutors say the alleged misuse includes more than 11 thousand dollars of a relief fund .. set up after the March two-thousand explosion that killed three workers and closed the plant down for months.
The indictment says Edward Alexander Ramsey, Rhonda Lorraine Creed, Joseph William Burress, William Edward Fricker, and Elizabeth Jane George made undeserved fund payments to themselves, even as other workers were not made aware of the fund's existence .. and others in greater need were denied fund benefits.

A South Boston man has been charged with attempted murder for hire. A federal indictment says 60-year-old Leo Hinson tried to hire an acquaintance to kill Eric Brown and his wife. Brown was scheduled to testify against an associate of Hinson in a North Carolina court. Authorities allege Hinson was willing to pay 50-thousand dollars to carry out the killing, and discussed another possible murder. Hinson was arrested earlier this month and is being held without bond.

He's accused of prescribing OxyContin without a valid medical reason. He tells the court he hasn't even completed the "arduous" process of copying patient files. 258 patients have requested their records, Knox says.

The first airline to offer non-stop passenger service from Roanoke to an international destination is taking off.


Laker Airways says all three weekend charter trips it planned to Freeport, Bahamas are sold-out, the second of which leaves this Friday.
Royal Oasis Golf Club and Resort owns and operate the airline.
It offers similar deals in more than 30 other cities in the Eastern United States.
The resort says the success of the three Roanoke charters will likely lead to regularly scheduled flights.
