THE 49 YEAR OLD DIVORCED FATHER LIVES JUST TWO DOORS DOWN FROM THE VAN DAM'S. POLICE NEVER SAID WHY, BUT THEY FOCUSED MUCH OF THEIR INVESTIGATION ON THE SELF EMPLOYED ENGINEER. WESTERFIELD DID ADMIT TO BEING IN THE SAME CLUB AS DANIELLE'S MOM ON THE NIGHT SHE DISAPPEARED, ALTHOUGH EVERYONE INVOLVED CLAIMED IT WAS MERELY A COINCIDENCE.
DANIELLE'S PARENTS SAY THEY ARE RELIEVED BY THE ARREST.

A man who spent his career bringing entertainment to children of all ages has died.

Chuck Jones's career spanned more than six decades - during which he worked on more than 300 animated films and won two Oscars as a director.
He also won an honorary Oscar in 1996 for lifetime achievement.
Jones is best known for helping create the infamous Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Road Runner and Wile E-Coyote for Warner Brothers.
He also drew Elmer Fudd, Porky Pig and Pepe le Pew. Jones was 89 years old.

Brownlee cited the case of the woman we met Thursday at Doctor Knox's arraignment. The U-S Attorney said it's a tragedy that Connie Shriver is suffering withdrawal from narcotics. The government convinced a U-S Magistrate to ban Knox from writing prescriptions, pending trial... and the court ordered him to refer all his patients to other doctors. Knox is charged with health- care fraud, setting up a kick-back scheme and illegally prescribing narcotics.

Officials are blaming a faulty power strip for a fire at local pawn shop.

Yesterday, The Pawn Shop-2 on Jamison Avenue suffered about a quarter-million dollars in damage in the fire which was mainly confined to the first floor of the building. Nobody was injured, but most of the store's SHOWROOM merchandise was destroyed. Very little CUSTOMER merchandise was damaged. The owners say they will re-open the shop on Jamison Avenue. In the meantime, they are directing customers to their other pawn shop on Cove Road.

State foresters are keeping an eye on what's left of a massive wildfire in Amherst County.

The blaze scorched about 560 acres in the "Galts Mill Road area" east of Madison Heights.
More than one hundred firefighters from around the region were called in to help contain the fire and keep it from consuming nearby homes.
Officials say the fire is contained.
Sparks from a railroad crew apparently started the blaze.

San Diego police say they have evidence linking David Westerfield to the kidnapping of Danielle Van Dam.
Van Dam's blood was recovered on clothing belong to Westerfield and also in his motor home. And his D-N-A was found inside her home. Westerfield lives just two doors down from the Van Dam's.

The Andrea Yates trial is in recess until Monday. Yates faces capital murder charges from drowning her five children in the bathtub.

Yesterday, the jury heard testimony from a Houston Medical examiner who showed a diagram from the autopsy of the oldest child.
According to the autopsy, the 7- year old boy suffered bruises on his head, arms, legs and chest. The doctor says the boy sustained some of those injuries while Yates held him under water.
Prosecutors hope to demonstrate how the children struggled in the tub giving Yates time to consider her actions and stop the killings.
The defense has started mounting its insanity defense.
The psychiatrist who treated Yates in jail quotes her as saying, her children had to die to be saved because they weren't righteous.
If convicted Yates could get the death penalty.

The Wall Street Journalist was kidnapped by Islamic extremists in the southern Pakistan city of Karachi back in January. His captors emailed photos of Pearl along with their demands for a ransom and the release of Taliban and Al Qaida prisoners...saying Pearl would be executed if the demands were not met. A video tape of his murder was delivered to authorities.

An arrest has been made in the six-week long investigation into radios stolen from Lynchburg's Ericsson Corporation.

Allan F. Johnson of Nelson Drive in Lynchburg is charged with three counts of embezzlement of property from his employer.
Police say Johnson stole computers, radios and software and used them to program emergency radios which he then sold to the Lynchburg Fire Department.

Job cuts are coming to Yokohama Tire in Salem in order to stay competitive - according to company officials. About 100 positions will be phased out over the next several weeks.

The company blames the layoffs on poor market conditions, and excess inventory and production levels. Yokohama Tire makes tires for cars and light trucks at the Salem plant. Overcrowding at Cave Spring High School means half of the student body will be going to a new school next year.
