The shooting happened just before eight o'clock in the 900 block of Hanover Avenue in Roanoke.

Roanoke Police say a preliminary investigation indicates the victim and several juveniles had been around this residence on Hanover Avenue and may have been banging on the doors or windows.
Officers say the victim was standing in front of the door, with the screen door open, when 82 year old (Hal-is) Hallis (Jame-i-son) Jamison shot her with a hunting rifle.
Jamison is in custody and charges are pending.

Police say Joyce Parrish, known to friends as Joy, was shot by two men attempting to rob the "Stop-in" on Hershberger road.
She died at the scene from a single gunshot wound to the neck.
Her co-worker, 31-year-old Steve (Riv-air-ia) Riveria, was shot in the shoulder and is recovering.
Area residents say the shooting has them on high alert.

The fire broke out just after five tonight on some train tracks off of Virginia Ridge Drive. That's near Hardy Road in Hardy.
The fire is contained at this hour but it has jumped the line several times .. fueled by high winds.
The fire has so far has burned more than six acres.
Firefighters don't know exactly what started it, but suspect sparks from a train may be the cause.

Orders to send between one and two hundred special forces into Georgia are expected later this week.

White Sulphur Springs City Council tonight postponed a vote on annexing The Greenbrier resort.
The vote had been scheduled for next week.

City Council and the mayor want to capture the nearly one and half million dollars in annual hotel-motel taxes from the posh resort.
The Greenbrier filed two lawsuits seeking to stop the vote.
Its lawyers argue that City Council violated the state's "open meetings law" when it voted February Eleventh to hold the annexation vote without proper public notice or debate.
They also contend West Virginia's annexation laws are unconstitutional.
The town's lawyers say The Greenbrier agreed not to pursue the lawsuits until council decides whether to reschedule the vote.

Central Virginia health officials say two new cases of whooping (HOOP-ing) cough have been reported in Bedford County.. bringing the total number of cases identified this month to eight.
An 8-year old girl who attends Body Camp Elementary School was diagnosed yesterday.
Today, an 82- year- old man became the latest person known to have the disease.
Whooping cough is highly contagious and is spread through coughing and sneezing.
Parents are urged to keep their children's vaccinations up to date.

The Maroons came in fired up and confident having won the regular season and tournament titles in the Hogohegee. The game started on an up note as Kevin Forrester sinks the first basket of the game. It also put the junior over the 1000 point mark for his career. The game was momentarily stopped as Forrester and his mom and dad were congratulated by coach Al Copenhaver. Back to the action - GW would keep cranking as Grant Throckmorton scoops in the driving shot off of Seth Gibson's pass. The Maroons start to build a little cushion.

Last night quarterfinal games were played throughout the area at various high schools. In Vinton, William Byrd hosted the Martinsville Bulldogs. Byrd won the state title in 2000 and made it to the final four last year. Last night the Lady Terriers would advance to the state semi-finals one more time as they beat the Bulldogs 15-to-7 and 15-to-3. The semi-finals and the state finals for both Group Two A and Group A will be played Friday and Saturday at Amherst County high school.
