Management at a New River Valley company is working to keep the business up and running.

Officials say 85-employees at Haleos are being furloughed for two to four weeks because the company is out of operating capital. Senior managers are staying on the job at the Blacksburg company to work with investors on long-term funding. A human resources official says he hopes to have normal operations resume in two weeks. Haleos was established in 19-96 by four Virginia Tech graduates. It makes fiber optic connectors and Internet systems.

The Henry County School Board's controversial plan to consolidate several schools ran into a roadblock yesterday.

The school board asked the board of supervisors for a roughly 700- thousand dollar advance to get started on the project. The school board is planning to consolidate four high schools into two. Yesterday the supervisors unanimously said NO to the request. A spokeswoman for the school system says it is still planning to move forward with the re-configuration ...and that the advance in funds would have allowed work to be done before students return to school in the fall.

A judge has decided that a crematorium operator in Georgia can get out of jail on 100- thousand dollars' bail.
He says he doesn't consider Ray Brent Marsh a flight risk or a danger to the public.
Marsh runs the Tri- State Crematory, where authorities have discovered 331 corpses--that were SUPPOSED to have been cremated.
He's charged with 16 counts of theft by deception.
Investigators are still searching the property, including a small lake nearby.

Jeffrey Skilling former Enron chief executive still maintaining that he believed the energy giant was healthy and that he had no indication that the company was collapsing when he abruptly resigned last August.
