Two Roanoke County men are in custody tonight thousands of miles from home. They're charged in connection with the murder of Joyce Parrish-- who was killed during an attempted robbery at a Roanoke convenience store. [***NEWS 7@ 11 MB GRAPHIC***]

State agencies and colleges are now under orders to conserve water... that's the word from Governor Mark Warner.
He's encouraging Virginians to cut back on their use of water for non-critical purposes.
Warner says climatologists believe the state will not get enough rain anytime soon to ease the drought.

The water level at Roanoke's main reservoir continues to fall, despite recent rainfall.
It's currently at 24-point-7 feet below the spillway.
City officials, though, say residents and businesses are doing their part.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says the 2002 Kia Sedona did the worst in bumper crash tests. On average the Sedona minivan suffered 24- hundred dollars in damage during four tests conducted at 5- miles- per- hour. The Institute says that the worst damage was caused when the minivan hit a flat barrier-- the air bags deployed and the windshield and dash cracked. Three other vehicles tested got marginal ratings. The 2002 models of the Subaru Impreza came out on top followed by the Mitsubishi Lancer and the Volvo S- 40. A marginal rating is just one notch up from poor.

A robbery suspect was quickly apprehended by Roanoke Police this morning just minutes after a holdup at Bank of America on Melrose Avenue.

It happened around 11:20 A-M. A man went in, presented a note and said he had a gun. A teller gave him some money, and he ran out of the bank. Going only on a description of his clothing, police caught up with the man at 11th Street and Fairfax Avenue.
He took off running, but uniform officers and detectives managed to arrest 30-year old Maurice Daniel Dooley of Christiansburg. They got the money back but did not find a gun.

A circuit court judge today approved a settlement of all the lawsuits involving Jones' estate.. one grandchild will get 200- thousand and both will split 62 acres of prime farmland.

Remy Martinot's father had his wife frozen when she died at early age in hopes that scientific developments one day would bring her back to life. His father had the same death wish. Martinot argued in court today that a man's last wish is sacred-- but the court said not so. The man's crypt had actually become an attraction-- tourists with a travel agency have paid to see it.

Travis Watson disappeared in the ACC tournament loss to N.C State, but last night he was a man possessed in the first half as he hit 8 out of 10 shots, scoring 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to lead UVa to a 33-to-27 halftime lead. But South Carolina got Watson in foul trouble in the second half and let their own big man take over. Rolando Howell, who himself had 16 points in the first half and finished with a career high 24 points, gave UVa fits all game. The Gamecocks took advantage of UVa's weak defense down the stretch and got some easy baskets as Virginia was never able to get any closer than three in the closing minutes.

((:)) ((Martinsville comes into the final four having won 11 state championships. The Bulldogs are looking for their second straight title but must first go through Robert E. Lee high school. The Leemen have won four state titles and coach Paul Hatcher is the winningest coach in VHSL history with 666 victories. They meet Friday at 8:30.
In the other double A final four, Blacksburg continues it's quest for the school's first state title since 1968. The Indians play Friday at seven PM against a tough King George team. ((:)) ((:)) ((:))
In triple A, Cave Spring is 16 and 10 and has reeled off seven straight wins. 26 and 2 Hayfield is the next step Thursday at the Vine center at 4:30. While J.J. Redick is averaging over 30 points in the last seven games, he is the first to attribute success to a group effort. ((:)) ((:))
Altavista, looking for it's first state title, is the lone area team still alive in the single A state tournament. The Colonels are 24 and 5 and will battle Honaker Friday at 2:30. Steve Mason Hometown hoops weekly.))
