Authorities say a mini- van was headed north on Route 501 when it tried to pass a tractor trailer in heavy fog.
The van collided with two other vans that were headed south.. three people were pronounced dead at the scene.. and at least 14 more were taken to Lynchburg General Hospital.
Police have not released the identities of those involved.. an accident reconstruction team was called to the scene last night.

At least five people are dead--and many others injured-- after dozens of vehicles piled up on Interstate 75 during morning rush hour.
Tractor trailers are piled on top of cars--
Authorities say anywhere from 50 to 100 vehicles are involved in the crash, just south of the Tennesee border.


The sheriff says thick fog in the area made for nearly ZERO visibility.

48- year- old Elizabeth Michael Farinacci (fair-uh-NAH-chee) appeared in Campbell County circuit court this morning.
She was indicted Monday for the shooting death of 48- year- old Frank Farinacci last month.
Elizabeth Farinacci told the judge she had no resources to hire her own attorney.. the court appointed Scott DeBruin to represent her.
She's being held without bond pending an arraignment in May.

Two men arrested in connection with a convenience store murder may have their extradition hearing as early as today.

27 year old Mark Lamont Neamo, and 18 year old Christopher Brian Krug were arrested yesterday near Omaha, Nebraska on abduction and firearms charges stemming from the February 25th robbery at the Stop-In on Hershberger Road. Roanoke detectives are expected to arrive in Omaha today to question the two suspects.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Nebraska State Patrol says the suspects were visiting a friend in the Omaha area. She was present when the suspects were arrested but does not face any charges.

Jurors in Houston are deciding whether convicted killer Andrea Yates should get the death penalty or serve life in prison.

The same jury found Yates guilty in the drowning deaths of her children.
A decision to sentence her to death would have to be unanimous.
And legal experts add that prosecutors may find it hard to prove Yates is a continuing threat.
If she receives a life sentence, Yates would have to serve at least 40 years before being eligible for parole.

That after a Scottish court in the Netherlands upheld the conviction of a former Libyan intelligence agent in the 19-88 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.
The Libyan Foreign Ministry called the decision a ``political verdict'' and vowed to continue efforts to free the former agent.
