Flooding caused by heavy rains forced evacuations in the far southwest section of the state today.
Blocked roads and heavy damage led the Governor to declare a state of emergency for several counites including Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Washington and Wise Counties- as well as the city of Norton.
Authorities in Wise County say about 400 people there were evacuated to shelters as minor mudslides closed several roads and bridges.
The state Department of Emergency Management says six inches of water is covering the main street of Coeburn.
In Saltville, Record flooding along the Holston River drove 15 people from their homes.
In Lee County and the town of Saint Paul, 60 people were stranded last night.
The governor has authorized up to 100 National Guard members and heavy equipment to help with evacuations.
The National Weather Service reports that four to seven inches of rain have fallen in southwest Virginia in the past 36 hours.
