It's been a tough month for the squad. It started when the state suspended its captain for violating certain rules.

So he resigned .. and so did four other volunteers .. leaving the county's rescue squad with only three members.

Rex Hale says that's one of things he was concerned about when he resigned.
He says even though he was forced to resign after the state suspended him for violating some rules -- he always acted in the best interest of the patient.
And now he's very concerned about Craig County residents -because there now only 3 active members on the squad.

The secretary for the Craig County Rescue Squad say things are looking brighter. They have 20 people including paramedics and drivers who are helping out until they can get more members. And the rescue squad will hold EMT classes in April to train more volunteers --24 people have already signed up.

Parts of far Southwest Virginia are picking up the pieces after devastating floods.
Officials are advising people in Wytheville to boil their water before using it... that's because flooding knocked out the town's water treatment plant.
The health department is concerned that some creek water might get into the system.
The town manager says the threat of contamination is very low, and that he hopes the treatment plant will be back on line soon.. In Smyth County residents say the rain came in hard and fast....leaving behind plenty of damage. About 75-people were evacuated from the area and are returning to their homes today to salvage what they can...

City police apparently did NOT find the mask they were looking for when they searched Mark Lamont Neamo's apartment last week.

The search warrant indicates sources told police they recognized Neamo's voice from the surveillance tape recorded during the robbery at the Texaco Stop In on Hershberger Road. While both suspects wore masks, police cite individuals who say Neamo told them he was the one who fatally shot store clerk Joyce Parrish. Some of the same people said they saw a mask- -like the one in the horror movie "Scream"- -in Neamo's apartment. A list filed with the court today indicates the mask was NOT among a dozen or so items seized from Neamo's apartment Thursday.

A special prosecutor has been designated to look into last month's fatal accident involving a Vinton patrol car.

Officer John Munsey was pursuing a speeding pick-up when a car carrying Audrey St. Clair and Onita (Ah-NEE-ta) Bryant collided with Munsey's vehicle. The two women were killed instantly. There's been no public account of how fast the police car was traveling. A report from state police was turned over to the County Commonwealth's Attorney, but he has asked his counterpart in Botetourt to consider what should be done. A judge signed the order today naming Joel Branscom Special Prosecutor.

A Buena Vista judge has agreed to hear arguments by Paula Johnson, who is still seeking custody of her biological child.

Johnson has been raising another couple's child since a well-known baby switch at the University of Virginia Medical Center in 1995.
The switch was not discovered until three years later.
Johnson has custody of Callie Conley, the child she has raised since birth.
Johnson's attorney says she's married and financially stable and can raise her biological daughter Rebecca, who now lives in Buena Vista with her grandparents.
The custody hearing will be held May 24th.

Here are some highlights from the proposed budget unveiled today:
Real estate and property taxes will stay the same, but the county administrator is recommending an increase in the 9-1-1 tax ... from 80 cents to a dollar a month.
The cost of county vehicle decals would go up 5 dollars.
Schools would get a 3 percent INCREASE in funding.
The county administrator also proposes using one-million dollars set aside for the central library to cover the shortfall.
The county would then borrow 1-point-5 million dollars to build the library.

Brophy almost did die in a car accident in Nova Scotia in the summer of 2000. He broke a leg and has had several operations on his left eye, which was severely injured in the wreck. He's back to his old self. ((:)) ((:)) ((:))

A 13 year old girl, who was struck in the head by a deflected puck during Saturday night's game between Calgary and Columbus, died last night after fighting for her life for two days in a Columbus, Ohio hospital.
