An illegal dump with millions of tires caught fire this afternoon in the Southwest portion of Roanoke County, and continues to burn tonight.

Several roads around the fire have been closed off indefinately, and Roanoke County officials are asking motorists to avoid the area.

[TAKE ROADS PAGE FS 1001] That includes the Blue Ridge Parkway between Routes 220 and 221. Branderwood Road, Buck Mountain Road, as well as Hemlock Road at Starlight Lane have all been blocked off. Merriman Road from Starlight Lane to Starkey Road, Starlight Lane and Kings Chase Road are also closed as a result of the fire.

The owner of the tire dump is well known to Roanoke County officials-- About ten years ago, Willie Keeling was convicted of operating an illegal tire dump.

Back in November-- Roanoke County supervisors approved an agreement with Keeling and the Virginia Department of Environmental quality to get the site cleaned up.

Today's fire may bring back memories for those who witnessed, and battled, a tire fire in Franklin County almost seven years ago.

It was in late July of 1995 when black smoke billowed from the Virginia Rubber Recycling Plant in Rocky Mount.
Firefighters were able to contain most of the blaze within several hours, but they needed several days to put the last tires out.
Some months later an investigation determined wiring in a machine at the plant started the fire.

Today, workers began dismantled the building that is more than 50-years old.
The city condemned the building this week, after the foundation wall supporting the facade broke, causing the front wall to sag.
Church leaders says it would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix the building, money the church doesn't have.

Police say a Galax man shot his wife before turning the gun on himself yesterday. 73- year old Maxine Estep is hospitalized the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and is in critical condition. She was able to tell police that her husband shot her before he killed himself. A medical examiner confirms that 74- year old James Wilmer Estep died from a gun shot wound to the head.

It is a wireless broadband communications network that will be used in businesses and residential homes throughout Danville and all of Pittsylvania County.

Protesters took to the streets in Lima, just hours before Mister Bush arrived, blocking downtown streets and prompting major police mobilizations. This time it was former government workers who protested against recent job losses in the government sector. Police quickly dispersed the crowd, concerned about more violence after a bomb exploded Wednesday in downtown Lima. The President's foundry swing through Latin America continues tomorrow as he flies to El Salvador.

He was taken to a medical institute outside Moscow for the first of a battery of tests. Bass will undergo six months of intensive training starting in May at Star City, outside Moscow, preparing for a November flight aboard a Soyuz rocket with three professional Russian cosmonauts.

It's one for the record books.
Today, kids from all over Roanoke County helped build the world's largest easter egg.

It was all part of the county's Parks, Recreation, and Tourism's Eggstravaganza Event held at Walrond Park.
The completed egg stands twelve feet tall and measures eight feet across.
The egg was assembled on site and then decorated by several hundred kids.
According to the Guiness Book of World Records this is the world's largest easter egg.
The event ended with an appearance by the easter bunny himself.
