It's a solution that's gaining speed.
A company called Star Solutions has come up with a proposal to widen Interstate 81.
But the project would take fifteen years and many feel safety improvements are needed now.
That was the subject of a community forum held tonight in Roanoke.

Most who have driven on I-81 agrees improvements are needed.

Regardless of who's right, the plan would take nearly twenty years to complete.
That's why the second half of this forum concentrated on ways to improve safety now.
V-Dot plans to install more guardrails and rumble strips along I-81.
The State Police will also add more patrols in the air and on the ground.
Increased patrols began in 1999 and troopers say it's already working.

And of course the motoring public has a responsibility here. State Police say motorists need to slow down and more need to use their seatbelts.

Jean, as for when Star Solutions could begin widen I-81, that would come in 2004.
But first, V-Dot must approve the project. That decision is not expected until this summer.

State Police are investigating a high-ranking official within the Republican Party of Virginia.
The investigation surrounds alleged eaves-dropping and possible taping of a conference call between Democratic lawmakers and Governor Mark Warner.
The Attorney General's office confirmed it received information earlier this week about possible misconduct regarding the taping of a phone conversation.
It also said the investigation is being handled by the State Police and the Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney.
According to a government source, no charges have been placed and the Republican party is cooperating.
When reached for comment, a spokeswoman for Warner said the Governor has been informed of the investigation, but has no comment because it's a pending criminal matter.

Fire investigators ruled out the possibility that a passing train sparked the fire because it started FAR from the railroad tracks. They believe the train passed through AFTER the fire started.
Fire Marshal Don Gillispie says fires were set in two separate spots along a gravel road.
It only took minutes for winds to blow the flames up the bank, over the the tire tracks and into a pile of tires.

The Boeing 3-0-7 Stratoliner crash-landed this afternoon.
All four people on board were safely rescued.
The Boeing 3-0-7 is a civilian version of the World War Two B-17 bomber.
Built in the 1940's, the Stratoliner boasted the world's first pressurized passenger cabin.
Only ten of them were made and the plane that crashed today was the only one left.
It was supposed to be the centerpiece of the new Smithsonian Museum being built at Dulles Airport.
Salvage plans are under way, and it could fly again.

"Remember Me" encompasses the Statue of Liberty, the New York city skyline, parts of the Pennsylvania landscape and ghost images of the World Trade Center Towers.
A second panel complete with swatches labeled with the names of the more than 3-thousand victims, will be added to complete the quilt's pentagon shape.
Mesimer hopes to finish the piece in a week or two.

39 year old Michael Jordan, who had knee surgery back on February 27th, said yesterday it's still too early to say if he will play again next season.
His contract calls for him to play at least one more, but Jordan says it all depends on his health.

((After a 5 and 7 2001, even fans attending spring practice felt a more strict mood around the football team. One third of the team is not participating in spring ball, perhaps because many of those players are among one of the nation's top recruiting classes that will arrive July 26th.

The Cavs are no longer in suspense about their quarterback. Matt Schaub took steps this off season to let everyone know, he's the guy.

Senior All ACC first teamer Billy McMullen and linebacker Angelo Crowell are the new team captains. Crowell and his defense are wearing orange crush jerseys in practice, a name that can be traced to the Denver Broncos D back when UVa offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave played there. New jerseys for a team with now well adjusted to it's second year coaching staff.

The school's competition team performed its winning routine in front of classmates this morning.
The team is comprised of 9th through 12 graders and includes members of the varsity and j-v squads.
Coach Barbara Shutt says the group was judged on stunts, dance, tumbling and timing at the state championships in Richmond last weekend.
The team beat 15-other squads to take home the top trophy.
It was the fourth time the school's cheerleaders had earned a spot at state after winning competitions at the district and regional levels.
