The tire fire that's consumed Virginia's largest illegal tire dump was arson.
That's the determination of Roanoke County's fire marshal today.
The fire has consumed more than two-million tires since it started Saturday.

The E-P-A had to get a federal magistrate's permission to enter the property BECAUSE Keeling wouldn't let them on the property withOUT a warrant. He signed an agreement with the STATE and the COUNTY last November that gave THEM access to his land in exchange for 25-hundred dollars a year. But he refused to extend the deal to the feds.

The warrant issued last night gives the E-P-A access to the property for 90 days. Though various authorities have assured residents that health hazards are minimal, the declaration in support of the warrant warns of an imminent and substantial threat to public health. It says emissions from the tire fire may include toxic compounds such as sulfur dioxide and benzene, a suspected cancer- causing substance.

One of America's legendary entertainers, Milton Berle has died at the age of 93.

It seemed there was no stopping Milton Berle;

NATSOT Berle "I'm laughing because I know what's coming next."

Even late in life, the master of the one-liner was still going for just one more laugh;

NATSOT Berle "Thank you for this award. Of all the awards I've

received, this is the most...recent."
Mr. Television he was called. And for a very good reason;

NATSOT Theme of Texaco Star Theater

Back in 1948, it was Milton Berle who risked his career on this infant medium. No other big-name entertainer would touch it. But Berle grabbed the show and ran with it... taking America laughing and giggling into the Television Age;

NATSOT Berle -- "Hey lady" jokes

And nobody laughed harder or louder than that lady in the balcony;

NATSOT Berle -- another "hey lady" joke

The lady was Berle's mother Sandra. The ultimate stage mother who pushed Milton into show business when he was just five years old. As a child actor, Berle appeared in a dozen silent films with the legendary Charlie Chaplin;

SOT BERLE "If it wasn't for Charlie Chaplin, there wouldn't be a Berle.

I learned a lot from Chaplin."
Vaudeville followed where Berle learned standup comedy and the art of putting down hecklers. He was a headliner on Broadway and in nightclubs. A minor star in the movies;

(SUPER; "Sun Valley Serenade" 1941)
NATSOT Berle "The kind of girls I dream about; but you should see the

kind I get."
But television changed everything. Tuesday nights, Berle owned America. 80 percent of the TV sets were turned on to him. Even Berle was stunned as he later told Ed Murrow on "Person to Person."

SOT Berle "The biggest thrill I ever had in my career was when on a

Tuesday night, I used to pass a restaurant or a theater and I'd see a sign in the window saying, we're closed tonight, we're all home watching Milton Berle on television. That's the biggest thrill I had."
It was Berle's unpredictable live show that sold millions of TV sets... and attracted a surprising mix of celebrities;

NAT SOT Berle with Carl Sandberg "I'm pretty brash." "I'm not brash,

but rash."
From poet and author Carl Sandberg to Frank Sinatra to Elvis:

NATSOT Berle clowning with Elvis

So popular that parents appealed to Berle for help... too many children were staying up late to see him;

SOT Berle "One night, I said, good night children, don't stay up late,

this is Uncle Miltie. And it sort of caught on right after that. And everyone called me Uncle Miltie."
NBC signed Uncle Miltie to a lifetime contract; 30 years. It expired long before he did. And his show went off the air in the mid 50s... a victim of TV Westerns and bad ratings. Berle the host became Berle the guest on other shows. But he had led the way;

SOT Berle "I feel like a 20 year old. Unfortunately, there's never one

around."
And he'll be remembered for his jokes... the collection of nearly 7 million jokes he acquired over the years. The one liners he was frequently accused of borrowing from others. Didn't matter; the man was funny;

SOT Berle "Do I laugh every day? No. I don't think anyone laughs every

day. But as long as I can make people laugh-- that's my great pleasure."

NAT SOT Berle "Hey lady, don't laugh, this is what you look like when

you wake up every morning."
Hey lady... your kid did just fine;

SOT Berle "The only advice I'd have is live it up, because you only go

around once, baby."
