Yesterday's storms killed at least one person, and rescue crews are searching for six people who are missing in the Hurley section of Buchanan County.

Officials there said today that at least 200 houses were damaged by the latest storms, with 100 either destroyed or sustaining major damage.
Some areas in the northern part of the county remain without power, telephones, water or sewer service.

In the Smith Mountain Lake area, American Electric Power officials say 5-thousand residents went without power last night. By this morning that number was reduced to just under 500. All homes are expected to be back on line within the hour.
Utlity workers are making temporary repairs to poles and lines to restore service as quickly as possible. Crews say it appears downed trees are the cause of many problems. Officials say at the peak of yesterday's severe weather, more than 17-thousand homes lost service.

Five days after a tornado ripped through Bedford and Campbell counties, state and federal officials got their first up-close look at the damage today.

Assessment teams from the Department of Emergency Services and the Federal Emergency Management Administration have been called in.
They surveyed the damaged homes and businesses and spoke with property owners about their losses.

Warner has already decided to ask for federal assistance.

Today it was a screening device that sent an alert of a possible explosive at the Cleveland airport.

14 planes were evacuated- and two airport concourses were cleared so passengers could be re-screened.
By the time security personnel noticed that the alarm had sounded, the luggage and the person carrying it were out of sight.
Officials couldn't rule out the possibility that the bag was brought onto a departing flight before the concourses were closed.
The screening device that sent an alert about a possible explosive at the Cleveland airport today has been wrong before -- but authorities weren't going to take any chances.

Roanoke's main water supply -- Carvin's Cove -- has dropped to 50 percent of its capacity.
Another four feet, and the city will see mandatory water restrictions.
There are some things you can do to help flush out the problem.
The newest toilets on the market use a gallon and a half of water for the flush.... the old ones use up to six.
The choice of one plumber's trade magazine is a "Toto Toilet".
Even though there's little water in the toilet, it's strong enough to flush a dozen golf balls at once.
