The fire broke out just after four this morning in the 100 block of 18th Street in the Hurt Park Housing Development.

Upon arrival, fire officials determined one adult and two children were inside.
A two year old boy died at around 5:30 this evening, and a three year old remains in critical condition at Community Hospital.
Their mother, 25 year old Alice Diane Jackson, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In Virginia-- Buchanan and Tazewell counties are eligible for federal disaster assistance. Hardest hit was Hurley-- a mining town of about five- thousand people in Buchanan County. At least one man has died as a result of flooding there and another man is still missing. Tomorrow-- Governor Mark Warner plans to tour the flood-damaged areas in southwest Virginia.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of that deadly jailhouse fire in North Carolina.

Friday night's blaze at the Mitchell County jail killed eight inmates. It appears to have started in a ground-floor storage room containing wiring and an electric heater. It then spread rapidly throughout the two-story brick and wood building. Sheriff Ken Fox says most of the dead were being held on minor charges for a short period of time. Most were trapped in a second-floor holding cell. Officials say jailers tried to get to them, but the smoke was too thick.

But today the group, in a closed meeting, decided not to extend membership to Heming's descendants. The Monticello Association adopted a recommendation of an advisory committee to keep the association's membership roll restricted to Jefferson's descendants through his daughters Martha and Maria. In its report, the membership advisory committee also offered a proposal to set up a new organization open to descendants of slaves and workers at Monticello. That proposal was rejected.

Jarrett helped bring out a caution when he hit the wall and then collected John Andretti and Bobby Labonte on lap 170.
On lap 308, Ricky Rudd, who had the best car on the track with a 100 laps to go and was the race leader at the time, was the victim of a Rusty Wallace cut tire and Rudd hits the outside wall and finished 39th. The race had a record tying 14 cautions
Stewart jumped out to a three car length lead with 18 laps to go on a restart and never looked back, winning the Pontiac Excitement 400, his third win in seven career starts at Richmond.
