((In the Midwest.. a trip out to the mail is a call for caution....instead of a letter ...a bomb could be waiting.
Loren Martin, Iowa resident
"Who would hit the heartland? You know what I mean? This is the middle of the country and if you did something here, it would be worse than doing it on the coast, I would think.
The FBI thinks the fifteen pipe box bombs found in rural mailboxes in Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska since Friday can be traced to the same source. All the bombs
were made of the same materials and identical, rambling anti-government letters
were found along with several of the bombs.
Jim Bogner, FBI Special Agent, Lead investigator
Using a means like this with pipe bombs where you're injuring innocent people, a 70 year old woman, a 61 old woman, almost injuring a 14 year old newspaper girl, the letter carriers who are simply trying to deliver the mail, that's not the way to get the message across.
With six people injured and the bomber's note promising that " more attention
getters' are on the way", the Postal Service asked customers in the three Midwest states to tie their mailbox doors open or to remove the doors altogether as carriers cautiously resumed mail delivery.
Paula Prochazka, Cedar Rapids Postmaster
Carriers have been instructed not too open any roadside mailboxes. Mail that cannot be delivered to the curbside box, because it's closed, will attempt delivery at the door. If no one is home it will be left in a secure location.
With three states involved so far... tracking the source of the terror won't necessarily be easy. Hundreds of Federal law enforcement and postal inspectors from Iowa and Nebraska are working the investigation and more are being called
in from surrounding states.
