A mother and son are dead following a fire in Roanoke, and now police are looking for clues to a crime. Police say the fire was intentionally set.

The fire broke out just after four yesterday morning in the 100 block of 18th Street in the Hurt Park Housing Development.
Upon arrival, fire officials determined one adult and two children were inside.
A two year old boy died at around 5:30 yesterday evening, and a three year old remains in critical condition at Community Hospital.
Their mother, 25 year old Alice Diane Jackson, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors say police responded to the home Saturday night for a domestic disturbance.
A Police spokesperson would not confirm that or say whether investigators have a suspect.
Anyone with information on the fire is asked to call the Roanoke City Police.

City firefighters were called to the 19-hundred block of Westover drive shortly before dawn Sunday. Two residents were inside when the fire started. A local business owner was working in her store next door ..when she discovered the fire.

Governor Mark Warner plans to tour the flood-damaged areas in southwest Virginia later today .. one day after President Bush declared parts of Virginia and West Virginia federal disaster areas.

In West Virginia-- McDowell, Mercer, Mingo and Wyoming counties are now eligible for federal disaster assistance programs. At least five people have been killed and more than 500 homes and businesses have been damaged. Six people are also still missing.

The cleanup still has a long way to go in Bedford and Campbell counties, more than a week after a tornado turned homes and lives upside down.

Damage estimates top several million dollars in both Bedford and Campbell Counties.
The Federal Emergency Manangement Administration is still trying to determine whether central Virginia qualifies as a state or federal disaster area.
If that happens, property owners could be eligible for grants or low-interest loans to help rebuild.

In May of 1999- descendants of the Sally Hemings family were invited to a Jefferson family reunion and many were hoping to be accepted by the Monticello Association. But yesterday the group, in a closed meeting, decided not to extend membership to Heming's descendants. The Monticello Association will keep its membership roll restricted to Jefferson's descendants through his daughters Martha and Maria.
