Descendants of Thomas Jefferson have decided not to welcome the family members of one of his slaves.
Sally Hemings was the slave at Monticello with whom Jefferson has long been rumored to have a had a sexual relationship. Several of her desecendants say the former President fathered some of her children.
[VO-NAT 99-10 1:44:29]
In May of 1999- the Hemings family was invited to a Jefferson family reunion and many were hoping to be accepted by the Monticello Association.
But yesterday the group, in a closed meeting, decided not to extend membership to them.
The Monticello Association will keep its membership roll restricted to Jefferson's descendants through his daughters Martha and Maria.
That restriction excludes descendants of Sally Hemings.
D-N-A testing revealed that a member of the Jefferson family was the likely the father of at least one and possibly all six of her children.

Yesterday's win at Richmond takes him from 10th to 8th place.

But 103 out of 400 laps were run under caution .. including the fourth yellow flag, brought out by Dale Earnhradt Junior on lap 148.
He finished 36th.
The race had a record- tying 14 cautions, and drivers blamed the new sealer on the track.
Whatever the cause, Jarrett helped bring out a caution when he hit the wall and then collected John Andretti and Bobby Labonte on lap 170.
On lap 308, Ricky Rudd, who was the race leader at the time, was the victim of a Rusty Wallace cut tire.
Rudd hits the outside wall and finished 39th.
Stewart jumped out to a three- car- length lead with 18 laps to go on a restart.
