(( LOCATOR: NORWALK, CT (NATSOUND SKAKEL WALKS IN) 27 years after his neighbor was murdered 41-year old Michael Skakel is in a Connecticut Courtroom today denying he had anything to do with it. Skakel is accused of killing Martha Moxley back in 1975 when the two were 15 years old. This case has all the makings a mystery novel. There's money and fame--the players are both from wealthy families and Skakel is the nephew of Ethel Kennedy--the widow of Robert F. Kennedy. And there's the intrigue of watching prosecutors try to prove a murder case more than a quarter century old without an eyewitness and very little forensic evidence. Sot: Jonathan Benedict/Prosecutor. (pleased to be here) Investigators have traced the murder weapon--Moxley was bludgenoned to death by a golf club. The club was part of a set owned by Skakel's mother. In opening statements this morning prosecutors claim Skakel provided the evidence against himself through a number of
alleged confessions--including admissions they say he made during a stay at a substance abuse treatment center. sot: M

ichael Sherman/Defense Attorney "We've always maintained there were no confessions. Not to a babysitter, Not to a chauffer, Not to a barber, Not to the Fed Ex guy. Everybody seems to be coming out of the woodwork." Skakel's attorneys will challenge the credibility and reliability of those who claim he admitted the murder. Prosecutors struck the first blow this morning--calling Martha Moxley's mother, Dorothy to the stand. They hope to gain the jury's sympathy, it was Mrs. Moxley who campaigned for more than 26 years to find the person who killed her daughter. STANDUP: TO COME. ))
