They've already left Lynchburg, their last day in Roanoke is tomorrow.

The Virginia Army National Guard has helped with airport security since October, a result of the September 11th attacks.
President Bush requested the troops be posted in commercial service airports to provide increased security for the traveling public.
That job will now be taken over by the Transportation Security Agency.

Plans to build a power plant in Danville are still generating a lot of buzz, despite the lack of a developer.

The (Mirr-ent) Mirant Corporation in February canceled plans to build a 400-million dollar natural gas power plant in the Airside Industrial Park.
One week later, the State Corporation Commission issued a permit for the plant.
City Leaders in Danville hope that approval will help attract a new buyer.

Authorities say one tractor trailer rearended another on northbound I-81 near the 5-81 interchange at around 4 this afternoon. Traffic has been backed up for miles as a result of the incident. Nobody was injured in the accident, state police say traffic charges are pending.

An accident this afternoon in Roanoke County sent two people to the hospital.

It happened just before noon on Kessler Mill Road just off Route 311.
Police say the driver of the green Toyota was heading towards Salem when she crossed the center line hitting a gold Chevrolet.
Both drivers were taken to Roanoke Memorial with minor injuries.
Police have charged Kira Mason with failure to maintain control of vehicle.
She is recovering from a fractured leg.

A task force in Virginia Beach wants to make the city's beaches safer.

Last summer, four people drowned and a boy was killed in a shark attack.

In response, the Safe Beach task force has come up with a plan it hopes will keep tourists safe. The plan calls for placing information in hotel rooms and on signs at the beaches warning of dangerous rip currents and discouraging bathers from swimming at dusk and dawn. The city will also expand use of the red flags that warn of rough surf ... use all-terrain vehicles to patrol the beach at non-peak hours ... and provide a new telescoping tower to give lifeguards a better view of the beach.

Roanoke County is opening its door to the public. Next weekend, the county will host an open house at many of its fire and rescue stations. Tours will be available at all of the county's rescue facilities except Bent Mountain and Clearbrook.

[TAKE FIRE DEPARTMENT FS] Tours are scheduled for Saturday, May 18th from eleven A-M to three P-M. There will be free blood pressure checks for adults, and a chance for kids see the fire trucks and ambulances. Plus, folks will be on hand for those who want to learn more about becoming a volunteer.

Archeologists hope to unearth new information about James Madison's boyhood home. They want to get a better idea of what Mount Pleasant looked like before it burned down when Madison was nine years old.

The foundation of the house is about a half-mile from Montpelier, and was discovered last summer. Archaeologists had been looking for the house during seven previous years of excavations. Just a few months ago, Joan Foster was practically unknown to the Lynchburg electorate.. now she is the first woman sitting on City Council in the city in 8 years.
Foster surprised everyone in last week's election when she unseated the Hill City's vice mayor for an at- large post.. surprised everyone except maybe for herself.

Even with a swelled eye, Jason Kidd scored 24 points to lead New Jersey to a 89-79 win over Charlotte in game four of their Eastern Conference semifinals.

The man for Charlotte was our very own George Lynch. Lynch who averaged maybe 6 or seven points in the first three games, was the Hornets second leading scorer with 19 points.
Big George hit several clutch jumpers on his way to a 8 for 16 shooting day.
Charlotte got the ball bouncing or rolling the right way in the first half. Baron davis gets the roll, the Charlotte halftime lead was 44-39.

Liberty University claimed the school's first ever Big South Softball tournament championship today. The fifth seeded Lady Flames beat fourth seeded Winthrop 1-nothing at Terry Field on Winthrop's campus.
Liberty pitcher Ali Thompson was the MVP, throwing just six hits and no runs.
The Lady Flames now await an opponent in the NCAA tournament which will be announced sometime this evening.

The Arena Football2 league has taken over operation of the Roanoke Steam. The shake up in the front office has not affected the team. Roanoke ran its' winning streak to four games last night with a 27-to-23 win over the Norfolk Nighthawks at the Roanoke Civic Center. The Steam may be on a winning streak, but so far area fans have yet to fully embrace their arena football team.
