What started as a "hit and run" accident apparently ended with an assault on a police officer and a medic.
Police say 31-year old Mark Atkins of Roanoke ran a red light at the intersection of Brandon and Edgewood, hit another car and kept going.
A cab driver who witnessed the accident flagged down an off-duty Roanoke County police officer who then gave chase.
