Memorial Day events were held all over the region yesterday.
In Roanoke- a special ceremony was held at Lee Plaza.
Navy serviceman and Roanoke native Donald McArthur Young was just one of many who were honored.

Young was killed at the Pentagon during the September 11th attacks.
Roanoke City Councilman Bill Bestpitch gave Young's widow the key to the city.
His name is now engraved in the Roanoke Valley War Memorial "Wall of Honor."
Young was 41 when he died.

Daniels and Page say the symbolic significance of the flag has renewed itself since the September 11th attacks.

Fire forced five people from their home yesterday afternoon.
Firefigthers were called to a duplex on Whitney Avenue in northeast Roanoke around 5-30...

They found the duplex in flames. Most of the fire was in the front of the two-story structure, and the blaze burned through the roof. Both apartments were heavily damaged, and the Red Cross was called in to relocate all five residents.
Firefighters say one person was treated for minor injuries, but wasn't taken to the hospital. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Plans are moving along for a new golf course on a former Roanoke garbage dump.

The Scott Robertson Memorial Fund approached the city with the idea of building a clubhouse, driving range, teaching area and several golf holes at the East Gate Park.
The plans do not include changing the existing park amenities... which will still be open to the public.

And to celebrate- an open house was held recently.
The facility offers a clubhouse, resource center, medical and psychiatric services.
