State and local authorities are still don't know who planted a fake pipe bomb outside a home in Lynchburg yesterday.

Authorities were called to the 1300 block of Radcliff Avenue around three o-clock.
A homeowner had found what looked like a pipe bomb with batteries wrapped around it next to his house.
Officers cordoned off the area while bomb experts examined the device and determined it to be fake.
Police have no suspects at this time.

U-S Airways is making plans to re-activate its defunct Potomac Air subsidiary this fall. It'll have a new name- MidAtlantic Airways- and will nearly double the number of regional jets for its parent company.

The U-S Airways Express system will have 140 regional jets when the expansion is complete.
About 500 people are expected to get jobs with MidAtlantic, and the carrier says it'll try to hire U-S Airways employees who were laid-off after the September eleventh terrorist attacks.
No word yet on how that might affect service or jobs in Roanoke or Lynchburg.

CropTech uses tobacco plants to develop vaccines for life threatening human diseases. The company has benefited from Virginia's tobacco settlement money.
Almost 2-years ago CropTech received 2-million dollars to help find alternative uses for tobacco. Officials say construction of CropTech's facility in Charleston will be completed later this year. The company's website lists 28-employees. A news release says they will employ 40-people in South Carolina during the first year of operations and at least 110 by 2004.

A 14-year-old Roanoke County boy pleaded NO CONTEST yesterday to charges that he threatened to bomb his school.

One-thousand students at Hidden Valley Junior High were evacuated earlier this month, after students said the 8th grader showed them a hollowed out World War Two grenade.
The boy told police he was playing with the grenade and accidentally took it to school.

The judge took the boy's case under advisement until next month.
In the meantime, he ordered the boy to undergo comprehensive psychiatric testing.
The 14-year-old's attorney says his client faces other charges in court and is under a psychiatrist's care.

Residents of a northwest Roanoke community want city officials to help them get their neighborhood back on track...

Last night, members of Williams Memorial Baptist Church and First Church of the Brethren brought their concerns to city officials.
They say speeding traffic, heavy crime and unsightly trash are destroying their community.
They're asking the city to put up more four-way stop signs, increase police patrols and clean up dilapidated houses.
Community leaders are hopeful that officials will meet them halfway.

A citizens group is trying to figure out what to do with an old school building in Amherst County that has been slated for demolition...

The Madison Heights Elementary School has been vacant for more than ten years, and county supervisors had started taking bids to tear down the building.
But a former student thinks the structure can be saved.
Lynn Cunningham is an architect who says the school could qualify for historic tax credits that could be applied to its renovation.
