((The sound of explosions and gunfire could be heard across the city of Ramallah in the West Bank, as Israeli tanks and troops surrounded Yasser Arafat's compound.
Tanks and armored personnel carriers circled the Palestinian President's headquarters with him inside, but Israeli troops did not enter.
It all happening just hours after the latest suicide bombing.
That was in the northern part of the country, after a Palestinian terrorist blew up a huge car bomb next to a bus.
The blast was so powerful, it sent the bus flying into the air and off the highway.
The attack killing the bomber and 17 Israelis, mostly soldiers.
Arie Mekel/Israeli Government Spokesman
We believe Yasir Arafat is behind all this....put an end to terrorism.
Israeli Prime Minister Sharon immediately indicated his country would hit back after the latest attack...and he delayed his departure to the United States for a meeting with President Bush.
The violence comes after a week of relative calm...but little diplomatic progress.
That as Palestinian terrorists have shown once and again that despite Israel's punishing military campaign, they haven't given up.
Experts say they're even trying harder now, despite Palestinian Authority efforts to arrest members of suspected terrorist groups.
THEY SAY Israel's destruction of their security forces hasn't made the job any easier.
Yasir Abbed Rabbo/Palestinian Information Minister:
"...now they demand that these security forces do their maximum in order to control the situation.
Palestinian leaders say the Israeli incursion is a "major,
major escalation" and hope the U-S will intervene. Instead, the Bush
administration condemned the suicide bombing and continues to question
Arafat's relevance in the peace process. Teri Okita, CBS News,

Cavaliers' head coach Jim Thacker and Dan River's Sammy McCormick went over the ground rules and the field condition before the start of this one.
The Cavs opted to start their ace Daniel Tanner last night.
But the Cavs also knew that the Wildcats would be ready for the UVa bound star.
Ben Bennett smacks a seeing-eye single last shortstop. Trey Belcher is gonna try to score all the way from second on the play. And he will just beat the throw home with the slide. It's 1-to-nothing Dan River.
Still in the first, Dan River gets a gift - the routine ground ball is overthrown by the third baseman and that will allow Bennett to score. Forest is in a 2-to-nothing hole.
It stayed that way until the third when number 50 - Allen Bryant got under this pitch and lifted it into
right center field. The catch is made, but Lee Wright tags and scores. It's now a 2-to-one game.
Then in the bottom of the fourth the Cavs broke it wide open.
After tying it on a walk. A.J. Lucadamo - who had a couple of key at bats last night - drives in Austin Higley to give Forest its first lead at 3-to-2.
Then Brennan Thacker hits one sharply to first - he's safe and Wright comes home for the second time in the game.
[super=34-Dan River/5/Jefferson Forest/7;]
Bryant then knocked in another on a fielder's choice. Jefferson Forest continues its march with a 7-to-5 win. The Cavs will play in the state semi-finals Friday night at 8 at Calfee Park against Handley.

A crew began removing the theater's 60-year-old chairs this morning.
They'll be sent to the manufacturer to be refurbished.
When they return, they'll be wider with softer cushions.... but the seats will still have a 1940's look.
The Grandin Theater Foundation says they new chairs will enhance the movie going experience.

Instead of keeping all five screening rooms, one will house an expanded concession stand when the theater re-opens in early fall.
The ceiling beams will be repainted to match the theater's original style.
And cross lights are being put in place to light up the Grandin Gargoyles.
