Wilkins survived almost four hours of questioning last night by the Republican caucus to discuss allegations he settled a sexual harrassment complaint. Wilkins admitted to paying a settlement to a 26-year-old woman- but maintains that he did so, NOT because he was guilty of the charges- but because he wanted to protect his family and the Republican caucus. He also denied a 45-year-old woman's claim that he rubbed her leg during a Christmas party.

Also in Richmond yesterday, a group dominated by anti-tax conservatives says referendums that would raise sales tax rates in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads are illegal. The increased revenue would be used to build roads and alleviate traffic gridlock. A lawsuit filed by former state Republican Chairman Patrick McSweeney claims the Virginia Constitution authorizes tax-supported debt only if approved by a majority of voters in a statewide referendum. Governor Mark Warner supports the referendums. His press secretary says the governor is confident the legislation is legal.

Representative Virgil Goode and Senator George Allen hand delivered a check for the region's new Cyberpark.
300 acres will be wired with the latest fiber optic and electrical connections.
The Cyberpark is a project developed by both the city of Danville and Pittsylvania County in the hopes of bringing new high-tech jobs to the region.
The infrastructure located at the park will be matched only by that at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

U-S Airways has filed for emergency federal loans. They are the second airline to file for the loans and are asking for one billion dollars to avoid bankruptcy.
The loan program was approved last year following September 11th.
U-S Airways must submit a detailed restructuring plan to the Air Transportation Stabilization Board.
The airline says part of that will include a plan to reduce costs by one-point-two million dollars.
U-S Airways lost two (b) billion dollars last year, and has said it could run out of money by October without the federally backed loans.

Virginia may be among the nation's leaders in per-capita spending on police and prisons- but the Commonwealth ranks dead last in support for parks and natural resources. Those are among the findings of a J-LARC study released yesterday. According to the research, Virginia ranked 36-th nationally in per-capita state spending in 19-99, third in spending for law enforcement and prisons, and 50-th for natural resources and parks. The state also ranked 15-th in highway maintenance and construction, 27-th in public education, 38-th in health and welfare, and 32-nd in government administration.
