Wilkins resignation ends a swift and dramatic fall from the most powerful legislative position in Virginia. It comes after he admitted paying at least 100-thousand dollars in hush money to a woman who accused him of sexual harassment.

In a statement released late this afternoon, Wilkins said: I don't blame anyone for my troubles. Most of them I brought upon myself. But times have changed, and the rules have changed and what was accepted in the era in which I was raised is strictly off-limits today. I didn't change with the times, and if I have offended anyone I am truly sorry and I apologize.

Griffith says that the sexual harassment allegations coming on the tail of the Speaker's mishandling of the eavesdropping scandal led the caucus to believe Wilkins couldn't lead anymore.

The Speaker who represents Amherst said he still hasn't made a decision on whether he'll also abandon his delegate seat.
But that for now, he's taking a few days off.

As to who the new Speaker might be, Wilkins said he didn't "want to get into it" and added that recommending somebody for the position "might do" them "more harm than good."

The 14-year old suspect in Roanoke County's tire fire faces two felony arson charges. The case against him was upgraded today from misdemeanor counts.

Dow says the boy and his friends have subjected him and his wife to racial abuse almost since the day they moved in last Summer. On April 14- -about three weeks after the tires on Willie Keeling's property were set ablaze- -Tony Dow arrived home to find several boys emerging from his home. One of them was carrying a gas can, Dow says. They set fire in the woods near Dow's home. He didn't know the boys by name, but neighbors helped identify them and one was arrested.

A fire in Rockbridge County has burned nearly 500 acres of wilderness, and the fire is not out yet.

A lightning strike ignited the blaze in the James River Face Wilderness on June 5th.
Because of safety concerns, forestry officials say they're trying to contain the blaze with fire lines and backburns instead of sending in crews to battle the flames.
10 and a half miles of the Appalachian Trail and the Wilderness area are closed because of the fire.
Officials say they hope to have the fire under control by next Tuesday.

Hundreds of firefighters from around the nation are on the way to help.
Crews are working to protect homes by soaking them with water, chopping down nearby trees- and building fire lines.

Some Franklin County residents take issue with a law that allowed the federal government to seize a Penhook man's property.

Ralph Adkins' farmhouse and 99-acres were taken by the federal government more than a year ago after a moonshine still was found on the land. Adkins said he didn't know who the still belonged to. Under federal forfeiture law, the government can sieze property if it's more likely than not that the land was used illegally. Neighbors think the law is unfair.

A Martinsville Police Officer will not be criminally charged for hitting a child on a bicycle with his patrol car.

It happened on May 30th, when Officer Robert Haynes decided to check on a fellow officer who had responded to a domestic abuse call.
The boy suffered a concussion and some bruises.
Police say an independent investigation by state police trained in accident reconstruction determined the officer was not speeding.

A West Virginia woman who "joined the Air Force to see the world" was killed in yesterday's plane crash.

Air Force Sergeant Anissa (UH-neese-uh) Ann Shero of Grafton had been in Afghanistan only two weeks when her cargo plane crashed during take-off. Shero's husband, Nathan, is also in the armed forces and recently returned from Afghanistan himself. Shero grew up in a military family-- her grandfather was at the Battle of the Bulge, and her dad fought in Vietnam.

Both men survived. Shero was among three that were killed in the crash... seven others survived. Family members of the 31- year- old say she was a hero and will be missed.

The Express gets on a plane, flies to Los Angeles for a regular season hockey game... it could happen in the near future. The West Coast Hockey League it's seven team have approached the ECHL about a merger or playing inter league games. Express head coach Perry Florio told me last night that, through ECHL approval, the Express and other teams could play a certain amount of games with the West Coast league teams next season.

Florio is not the only one who feels this could happen. Pee Dee Pride president Jack Capuano agrees that Pee Dee and other ECHL teams will play west coast teams. Florio and the Express researched the travel costs and found that, to fly 25 Express personnel to Los Angeles would cost five thousand dollars round trip. An Express bus trip this past season to Peoria and Toledo cost the Express about 8 thousand. The ECHL league meetings are this Sunday through Tuesday in Las Vegas and this will be a major topic.
One other Express note. The team has agreed to terms on a contract with Terrance Tootoo, but he has not yet signed a contract, hopefully that will be done at the end of this month.

With just four games left in the first half of the Carolina League season, the Lynchburg Hillcats are right in the thick of the pennant race, tied with Wilmington for first place in the Northern Division. Last night, the Cats began a four game set with Kinston.

Lynchburg got the run back in the bottom of the inning. Yurendelle Decaster smokes an RBI single scoring Ronny Paulino from second tying the score at 1.

The College World Series begins this weekend in Omaha and former Cave Spring standout, Tyler Lumsden is scheduled to start game three for the Clemson Tigers.
