((Movie Review "The Bourne Identity" Universal
"The Bourne Identity" is a good old fashioned suspense thriller, set in exotic locales with appealing characters. Matt Damon plays a man found floating in the ocean. He has been shot twice but is still alive, and he has no memory of who he is. He discovers that he speaks several languages fluently and knows martial arts and how to handle a gun. He just doesn't know why. He also finds in his possession, the numbers to a Swiss account which holds a safety deposit box full of passports from different countries, each with his picture, a large stash of money in different currencies, and a gun. And, suddenly people are trying to kill him. He decides his name is Jason Bourne, and he goes on the run trying to find out who and what he is before agents from a shadowy government agency can eliminate him. He teams up with Marie, a strange young woman, who herself is a kind of drifter. Marie agrees to drive Jason to Paris for his offer of ten thousand dollars and she becomes a target as well. Chris Cooper is the mastermind behind the agency who wants Bourne in "a body bag by sundown." The suspense is derived from the fact that we like these characters, Jason and Marie, and want them to survive. There are few special effects here, other than car chases through the streets of Paris. The movie relies more on good storytelling and empathy with the characters. Rated PG-13, but there is a lot of violence for that rating. Grade B.
