A dispute in Axton over the weekend leaves one person dead and two wounded...

[VO -ONLY PRE-PRO MUG SHOT] The Henry County sheriff's office says 41 year old Larry Junior Carter shot and killed Antonio DeWayne Turner during a dispute that erupted into gunfire between the two men. Carter, who was shot in the foot, is also accused of shooting his younger sister, Lisa. The incident happened at the Axton Mobile Home Park shortly after 11:30 Saturday night.

Turner later died at the Martinsville-Henry County Memorial Hospital. Lisa Carter was released with wounds to her legs. Larry Carter faces 2nd degree murder, malicious wounding, and firearms charges. He is being held at the Henry County Jail without bond.

The victim has been identified as 48- year old Janice Payne-- Police say it appears she was assaulted inside her apartment just before either jumping from or being thrown from the third story window of her apartment.

The camp is free to city residents between the ages of six and twelve.

Two people were killed in an accident yesterday that backed up traffic on Interstate 81 for most of the day...

The tractor-trailer crashed just after seven thirty yesterday morning in Rockbridge County. State Police say 31 year old John Charles Patterson of Winston-Salem, North Carolina was killed along with his 11 year old son, John Junior. Patterson apparently lost control of his truck just North of Route-11 near Natural Bridge.

Both northbound lanes of Interstate 81 were finally re-opened around 6:30 yesterday evening.
The accident also caused some bridge damage-- so an inspector was called in to make sure the bridge is still structurally sound.

One person is dead and another is injured after an accident at the Wythe County race track. It happened Saturday night at the Wythe County raceway just off Interstate 81 in Rural Retreat. According to the sheriff- three cars crashed on the straightaway, one lost a wheel and it flew into the pit-- striking two people. 39 -year-old Lacy Don McNeill of North Carolina suffered extensive injuries and later died at the Wythe County Community Hospital. 33-year-old Donna Kelly also of North Carolina suffered injuries, but was later released.

Amtrak says that they can't keep going unless the company gets some federal funding... Governor Mark Warner is urging Congress to provide the money in the name of rural Virginia.

The railroad could shut down as early as Wednesday because of a 200- million dollar shortfall.
New Amtrak President David Gunn says Amtrak will start turning away passengers and moving trains to storage if it doesn't get more federal dollars.
Governor Warner says a shutdown could hurt places like Clifton Forge and Staunton which depend on their Amtrak stops for tourism revenue.
