It was a 54-year old Roanoke Valley resident who apparently committed suicide last night in Roanoke County.

The medical examiner's office reports the victim suffered multiple traumatic injuries consistent with a high fall. The body was discovered by fishermen around 10 o'clock last night beneath the Blue Ridge Parkway bridge over the Roanoke River. County police concluded all facts were consistent with suicide.

It's been a tough day for a local trucker driver. First he had to be pulled from his burning rig. Once he was rescued, state police cited him for reckless driving.

Northbound traffic on Interstate 81 was blocked for a couple of hours this morning .. after the tractor trailer crashed and caught fire near the Fancy Hill exit in Rockbridge County.
State Police say 21 year old Larry Darrell Altis Junior, of Christiansburg was driving too close to the side of the road, hit a guardrail and went over an embankment.
Police credit Jonathan Miles of Natural Bridge with pulling Altis out of the truck.

Speed is being blamed for a fatal accident in the New River Valley. Officials say a woman was driving this car at speeds up to 70-miles an hour on Roanoke Street, when she lost control.

Her Thunderbird struck a wrecker in the parking lot of Robert's Towing. The 55-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene; her identity is being withheld until her family is notified. The owner of Robert's Towing says his wrecker will be out of service for weeks. No one else was injured.

A woman who admits selling drugs to a teenager who then overdosed and died .. is heading to prison . 24 year old Melanie Benzenhafer (ben-zen-HAFE-er) plead guilty to second degree murder today in Botetourt County Circuit Court. She admitted selling the prescription pain-killer Lortab to Brian Osborne, 17 year old neighbor, in January. Osborne was found dead of an overdose the next day. Benzenhafer was sentenced to two years .. one in prison, another in a boot camp and work-release program. Prosecutors say the conviction sends a message that people who sell drugs to juveniles who overdose will be prosecuted for murder.

A Lynchburg minister and his wife are facing charges after police had to use pepper spray to break up a near-riot in a CHURCH last night.

Authorities were called to the White Rock Baptist Church on Florida Avenue around 7 to break up a fight among several members of its congregation.
The church-goers apparently were voting on whether to remove their pastor, Reverend Antoine Edwards, the Third.
Police say Edwards punched two people during the melee.
His wife is also accused of assaulting a police officer.
The Edwards' could not be reached for comment.

News 7 sports learned today that two of the University of Virginia's top two football recruits might NOT be playing in Cavalier colors next season. Fork Union head football coach John Shuman said this afternoon that he has started the process of enrollment at Fork Union for Virginia star recruit defensive end Kenan Carter.
Shuman also said he is awaiting official word on whether or not the nations number one high school linebacker and C.D. Hylton standout Ahmad Brooks will enroll at Fork Union next year and not play as a freshman at UVa. Shuman is awaiting Brooks A.C.T. score. UVa officials could not be reached for comment. Shuman will meet with the players at the VHSL East/West all star game next week.

On to open wheel racing where this morning, Indy League president Tony George held a news conference and rejected the appeal of the controversial Indianapolis 500 finish between Helio Castroneves and Paul Tracy, declaring Castroneves the race winner.
Ending the feud, which has gone on for a little over a month, George concluded that the split-second decision by the League's vice president Brian Barnhart - that Tracy's pass of the Brazilian driver occurred after the yellow caution flag flew - was unappealable and that even if it was, Barnhart still made the right call. This win is Castroneves' second straight Indy 500 victory.
