Route 6-55 off Route 122 at Diamond Hill Road was closed for over an hour because of downed power lines.

Roanoke Police are out in force tonight, looking for drunk drivers. They're cracking down on those who may be taking in a little too much holiday cheer this Fourth of July weekend.
Officers have set up a sobriety check point on Orange Avenue in Roanoke.

More than thirty officers are working this sobriety checkpoint which is located in the 1600 block of Orange Avenue near the Sonic Drive In.

So far, more than X motorists have been pulled over.
This particular checkpoint started just after ten o'clock this evening.
Officers are evaluating drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment.

((Federal agents are now focusing their investigation in this Los Angeles suburb where Mohammed Hadayet lived. They've already removed his computer and other personal items. Neighbors say Hadayet took down a sign about the Koran from his home, because he was worried about how his children would be treated. Others say he had a problem with an American flag his neighbor flew.

International travelers are returning to the Bradley Terminal to make their flights, signaling the return of normal operations at Israel's El Al airlines after yesterday's attack.

Dr. David Parkus heard the shots and turned in time to see gunman Mohamed Hadayet wrestling with a guard.

"I ran out and jumped on his legs (covered by video)...and just held his legs down while the security guards tried to disarm him."
Hadayet was shot and killed by an El Al Security guard. Parkus said he helped hold the gunman as he died, then performed CPR on two other victims. His brother calls him a hero.

Thousands of July 4th travelers heard the shots and scrambled for cover. But Hadayet killed two people before he was killed. Among his victims, passenger Yakov Aminov who leaves a pregnant wife and 8 children. While Hadayet carried a driver's license that listed July 4th as his birthday, the FBI says there is still no clear motive for Hadayet's attack.

A Tennessee driver stopped his car in the middle of the highway.
Police thought someone was having car trouble, but when they approached - the driver sped off-
After a 40 mile chase- police blew out the cars tires- but the Nashville man refused to come out.
Four hours later, he doused himself and the car with gasoline.
Swat teams then moved in spraying the car with foam-
Police say the man's behavior indicates a mental problem.
When asked by officers why he raced away in the first place- he told them he had important things to do.

Back in our region, a Lynchburg 7-11 store was the target of an armed robbery .. for the second time in less than a week.

It happened early yesterday when police say a suspect entered the store, told the clerk he had a gun and ran off with a small amount of cash.
Police arrested 29-year-old Patrick Jason Mann a few hours later.. they say Mann was stealing money to support his drug habit.
Authorities believe Mann started his evening by burglarizing a hair salon and used that money to buy drugs.
He's been charged with both crimes.

Roanoke detectives have interviewed a man involved in a fight that left another man dead last month.
The man is not being identified, because he has not been charged.
The victim was 41-year-old Christopher Swanson McCoy- He died of injuries from a fight at the Jordan Mart on Cove Road Northwest.
Police are hoping other witnesses will come forward.

A local congregation is picking up the pieces after a fire destroys their place of worship. A blaze spread through the First Baptist Church in Hillsville on Wednesday, gutting the sanctuary and damaging other parts of the building. Fire officials say the fire started when lightning hit the church steeple. New River Valley Bureau Chief Rachel Cannon spent the day at the church as they look to the future.

The town began using a new water tank in the last two weeks. And the changes have caused leaks in some of the system's older lines.
Town crews have been working to fix the problems, and contractors are due on Monday to help with repairs.

But first our extra point. Former Boston Red Sox star Ted Williams passed away from congestive heart failure today at the age of 83.
Williams was a six time American League batting champion and a two time A-L Most Valuble Player. He was also the last man to bat four hundred in a major league season.
He played 19 years witht he Red Sox, but his career was interupted twice for military service in World War Two and Korea.
He retired after the 1960 season with a .344 average and 521 homers.

After rain postponed qualifying yesterday, Winston Cup drivers arrived at the track at 7 this morning for the 10 am time trials for the Pepsi 400 at at Daytona International Sppedway.

Right after Earnhardt Junior qualified, Kevin Harvick went out in the GM Goodwrench Chevy and won his first career Bud pole with a speed of 185.040 miles an hour.

Express coach Perry Florio said from vacation tonight with his family in Myrtle Beach, that Roanoke and Daniel Berthiaume have parted ways in order, as Florio says, to hopefully develop two young goalies. The Express has not signed a goalie yet for next season.

The former NHL goalie spent six seasons with the Express and was one of the top five goalies in the entire ECHL each season in Roanoke except last year. He is the all time wins leader for Express goalies with over 130 victories.
Berthiaume, who is 36 years of age, was hoping to play one or two more seasons for the Express and then retire.
The Express has signed center Terrance Tootoo for next season. he had nine goals and 16 assists with 218 penalty minutes.

Back to Berthiaume. Three other ECHL teams have voiced interest in signing Berthiaume. Greensboro has offered him a contract and Toledo and Wheeling coach John Brophy have also spoken to Berthiaume.
