The morning commute could be slow moving on Route 4-60 in Bedford County. One lane remains open in each direction after an accident yesterday.

A portion of the highway between Bedford and Thaxton was closed yesterday morning after a tanker truck tipped over in the eastbound lanes, spilling thousands of gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel. Throughout the day, haz mat crews were busy removing polluted soil from the site. State police estimate more than six thousand gallons of fuel spilled onto the ground. Officials will also be monitoring nearby wells for any groundwater contamination.

Water woes are now taking a toll on Amherst residents... For the second time in three years, water customers are being asked to cut back on their water use.

Town Council held an emergency meeting yesterday morning to make the restrictions mandatory.
Officials say they may have to start drawing water from three county reservoirs in order to increase the flow in the Buffalo River.

Six months into his term, Governor Mark Warner says he wants to be remembered for helping the state through rough economic times.

The Democrat never held elected office before when he was sworn in last January.
Republicans soon stole the spotlight from him with a string of controversies.
The new governor did win some legislative battles with the help of Speaker Vance Wilkins.
But Warner recently lost his Republican ally when Wilkins resigned amid scandal.
The governor will face a new Speaker next year along with budget shortfalls due to the sagging economy.
Warner says he sees these challenges as opportunities, not obstacles.

Ed Matricardi resigned as the head of Virginia's G-O-P amid criminal charges that he illegally monitored Democratic Party conference calls.

Meanwhile, some students at the Roanoke Academy of Math and Science may move to new classrooms this fall.
Though test scores have improved, the academy WAS on a warning list of schools that were failing to meet accreditation standards. A new federal law requires the school system to offer parents the opportunity to transfer their children.

Meantime, authorities are awaiting D-N-A analysis that could determine whether Richard Evonitz is responsible for the serial slayings. The F-B-I and other authorities are trying to track Evonitz's travels and compare them with the dates of similar unsolved crimes elsewhere. Evonitz killed himself June 27th in Florida. He was sought for an abduction and sexual assault in South Carolina.
