Darlene Burcham and Elmer Hodge met reporters before they sat down for their first formal meeting on the water authority.
Standing in the parking lot of Goodwill industries, leaders hope a spirit of goodwill will prevail as they consider many complicated issues.
First on the agenda is in-depth research to consider how other communities have dealt with water issues... and what legal requirements the city and county must meet, as they consider the consolidation of two water systems that grew up independently.
But both say they are optimistic about their prospects for success.

Police are searching for a man who today failed to show up in court for allegedly luring women to his home under false pretenses.
Howard I. McCormick was arrested May 22nd on a relatively archaic charge of keeping a bawdy house.

Police say McCormick would place ads in local newspapers asking for pet sitters or a nurses aide.
When women would show up for the job, he would ask them to massage him with lotion.
Authorities began to investigate after receiving more than a dozen complaints from women across central Virginia.
McCormick was scheduled to stand trial on the charges today, but didn't show up in court.
Judge Harold Black issued an order for his arrest.. McCormick's attorney says his client may be in California.

Maurice Daniel Dooley admitted in Circuit Court today that he handed a Bank of America teller a note saying he needed 700 dollars. The note said: "Please don't mess up." Police caught up with Dooley almost immediately, based on witness's reports that the suspect walked with a limp. He still had the 700 dollars in his pocket. Dooley will be sentenced only after a psychiatric report is completed.

John Milton Seaton was found guilty of bank robbery by a Roanoke jury. He held up the F-N-E-B bank on Ninth Street late last year. The serial numbers had been recorded from 500 of the 24-hundred dollars in cash the teller gave Seaton.
Seaton has a prior record that includes rape, robbery and unlawful wounding. The judge will decide in August whether to impose the THIRTY year sentence set by the jury Wednesday.

Blacksburg police have charged a man with murder, after finding a body at the Clayton Estate mobile home park.
A co-worker of the victim called police this morning when the person failed to turn up for work.
Officers forced their way into the trailer, and found the body in a bedroom.
Police are refusing to release any details about the victim until the family is notified.
They've charged 26-year-old Michael Stevenson Parks with second degree murder. Parks is being held without bond in the Montgomery County jail.

Environmental clean-up crews are still excavating tons of dirt from the site where a tanker truck carrying gasoline and diesel fuel overturned Monday.
About 77-hundred gallons of fuel spilled onto the roadway and a nearby ditch. Crews are working to remove any contaminated dirt before the gas seeps into the groundwater.
On-site tests performed today indicated some of the soil is still contaminated. Officials say they're trying to determine the depth of the problem before deciding how much more dirt to remove.
Once the site is cleaned out, crews still have to fill-in the 15-foot deep trench before the road can be re-opened.

According to a new study, almost half of Virginia's rivers and streams are not clean enough for drinking, swimming or for eating the fish caught in them.
The Department of Environmental Quality released a study this week on the condition of Virginian waters.
About 44 percent of Virginia's rivers and streams are considered "impaired."
That includes parts of the Roanoke and New Rivers.
The state found an increase in the number of contaminated water from last year.
Officials are asking water enthusiasts to look before diving in.

First Christian Elder suffered a concussion and he also may have a broken right clavicle when he put his Ford into the outside wall at the one and a half mile track. Safety crews had to cut the roof off of the car just to get him out. He was taken to the infield care center and then airlifted by helicopter to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields - where he is scheduled to undergo a CAT scan. Moments after that - Florida driver Dan Pardus also hit the outside wall and hit car erupted into flames. Pardus got his net down, but got stuck several times trying to free himself and get out of the car. Safety crews took forever to get to him. He finally got out and he should be OK. We'll have the Cup rundown at 11.

7 of the top 3 year old turf horses in the United States will be in Virginia tomorrow taking part in the fifth annual "Virginia Derby" at Colonial Downs.

Last year's derby came down to the wire, and this weekend the field of horses and jockeys is outstanding with Edgar Prado - the jockey who won the Belmont in the field along with the man who rode War Emblem to wins in the other two thirds of the triple crown - Victor Espinoza. Post time for the race is just after 5:30 tomorrow and the big news is that the purse is now at a half a million dollars.
