Millions wouldn't have migrated below the mason dixon line to cities like ot and humid Houston. Hockey wouldn't be played in places like Phoenix And what would Sin City be like without a cool hand? These days, most of us don't give the air conditioner a second thought--but 100 years ago a man named Willis Carrier gave it more than just a thought--he invented it.

"IT WAS 1902--OVER THERE IN BROOKLYN, A PRINTER WAS HOT UNDER THE COLLAR BECAUSE THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY INSIDE HIS PLANT WOULDN'T ALLOW HIM TO PRINT A DECENT COLOR IMAGE. SO IN HIS OWN SORT OF WAY--CARRIER GOT THE MAN TO CHILL OUT." That's when he installed the chiller-- as it was called back then. Carrier's invention allowed him to scientifically control the temperature and humidity inside. In 1924 Detroit's J.L. Hudson department store had shoppers flocking there to cool off. New York's Rivoli Theater advertised it's cool comfort inside. By the 30s Carrier was helping cool off the hot heads in Congress. He was the first to put A.C. in a car...a convenience most drivers have today.
