Students in 34 Virginia schools will soon have the option of transferring to higher performing public schools.
Those schools are now subject to sanctions under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.... that's because they failed to meet state reading and math objectives two years in a row.

Four of the schools are in our area-- Central Elementary in Amherst County, Jeter-Watson Intermediate in Covington, Woodrow Wilson Elementary in Danville and the Roanoke Academy of Math and Science.
The schools must notify parents of the school choice provisions by the beginning of the 2002-2003 school year.
They'll also each receive more than 100-thousand dollars from the federal government to improve instruction and implement school reform programs.

The mid-morning shooting marked Simon's third visit to the Food Way Market that day, by his account. He said he'd pointed the gun at Grogan only as if to say, "go on, get away from me." He said Grogan "rushed" him outside the Food Way Market, grabbed the gun and that the two young men struggled for control of it. Simon said they fell to the ground as the gun went off the first time, that Grogan fell on top of him, though Simon says he didn't realize Grogan had been shot. Apparently Judge Charlie Dorsey didn't believe much of that, finding Simon guilty of first degree murder. He'll sentence Simon in September.
