It is a process called Tamping and it was done with a tamping machine for a few hundred feet- until the machine broke. Then it was done by hand to bring the rails level as they came off a slope.

35-year-old Sheron Williams appeared in a New York court today to face grand larceny charges.
Police say the former Walmart cashier was stealing goods right at the register.
They say she would pay an accomplice to pose as a customer.
As her accomplice went through her checkout line, the cashier would scan a low priced item, but move a very expensive one around the scanner- making it look like a normal transaction.
Police say Williams has a history of similar crimes.
She's been arrested in New York and several other states for pulling the same scam at other stores.

((There were some weird sites at Falcons training camp, but watching defensive end turned linebacker Patrick Kerney back pedal into pass coverage..now that has taken some getting used to.

If anyone on the Falcons defense should have felt secure at his position coming into this season, it was Kerney. He lead the team in sacks with 12 last season. But Atlanta's decision to move him to linebacker was a change the team had to make and Kerney has changed with the position.
