Good Afternoon, I'm Kimberly McBroom.
The risky 20- hour surgery is over.
And a doctor who helped out with the procedure says it appears to be a success.
He says one of the Guatemalan baby girls lost a lot of blood, but was given transfusions.
The surgery started yesterday afternoon at Mattel Children's Hospital at the University of California at Los Angeles.
The one- year- old girls were attached at the top of the skull, and faced opposite directions.
Now doctors are said to be optimistic about the girls eventually being able to play together like other children.
Manuel Gallegus is in Los Angeles, and joins us now with an update.

Calling it truly miraculous....doctors have separated one year old Guatemalan girls who had been joined at the skull.

(surgery team cheered..clapped)

The operation, which began Monday afternoon, took about 20 hours. ..supported by over 50 medical professionals at Mattel Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. Doctors say the brains of the two girls were not connected and that made it much easier to separate them.
The girls did share skull bone and blood vessels. It was the separation of veins that was said to be the riskiest part of the surgery.
Sot: Dr. Houman Hemmati, Assisted in the surgery.
(when separating blood vessels..have to make sure each child gets enough

blood flow )
The girls, Maria Teresa and Maria de Jesus were born in rural Guatemala...joined in such a way that they could not see each other. A non profit group brough the girls to the U.S. for treatment. Most of the operating team donated their time....but hospital costs are still expected to be 1 point five million dollars. ))
