Prosecutors say the DNA evidence is there- the girl's fingerprints on the defendant's bed post- her hair in his bed sheets.. a drop of her blood found on his clothing.
But in closing arguments, the defense says Westerfield is a "father of two" would never commit such a crime.

((The man accused of killing Danielle van Damme listened silently, as his attorney made the closing argument, and asked jurors to consider one question: STEVEN FELDMAN/DEFENSE ATTORNEY: Who is David Westerfield? The attorney says hes a man who had never been in the van dammes home. Steven Feldman argued that whomever kidnapped Danielle got into the garage, went up the stairs and made his way to her bedroom, and took her out, all in the dark. FELDMAN: Someone who she hardly knew, family down the hall, theyre not gonna scream: Mommy, daddy help me! Danielles father put her to bed February 1st, and never saw her again. But there is no physical evidence that links Westerfield to the home. Prosecutors argued that other DNA evidence puts the two together. Detectives found Danielles hair in between Westerfields bedsheets. They found a drop of her blood on his clothing. And found her fingerprints on his bedpost. Both sides have argued whether Westerfield is the kind of person who could commit this kind of crime. FELDMAN: Hes the father of two college-age children, hes got mortgage payments. ASST. DA. JEFF DUSEK/PROSECUTOR: We dont want to hear that a 50-year old man two doors down killed that 7-year old child. But he did. CHRIS LAWRENCE/CBS NEWS: To prove the opposite, the defense has been drawing attention to one fingerprint in particular. Detectives discovered it on the van dammes banister, and it doesnt match Westerfield or anyone in the family. Chris Lawrence CBS News San Diego.))

The fire at 13-30 Thomason Road Southeast broke out around 4:40 this morning. Fire crews quickly brought the flames under control. A neighbor says Jim and Marion Reynolds lived in the house with their 36-year old son, Greg, who is being treated at the UVA Burn Center for extensive burns. The Reynolds and two children were also treated for a variety of injuries including first and second degree burns and smoke inhalation. The fire was contained to an upstairs bedroom. Damage is estimated at 30-thousand dollars.

**Another fire, earlier this morning, displaced a married couple and killed several of their pets. Investigators say the blaze at John and Judy Chambers' house at 1812 10-th Street Northwest was accidental, caused by an electrical malfunction. A relative says fire crews were able to save a couple dogs but that a handful of other animals could not be rescued.

Good afternoon folks and welcome to the hump day ticker. We start with news from Redskins camp where first round draft pick Patrick Ramsey has finally signed a contract with the team. The former Tulane quarterback inked a five year deal worth 5.7 million dollars, which includes a signing bonus of 3.1 million. As late as Tuesday night, it appeared that Ramsey would be traded to the Bears. But the deal never materialized and now he's left to battle with Danny Wuerffel, Shane Matthews, and Sage Rosenfels. Ramsey isn't expected to play this weekend when the Skins take on Carolina in their second preseason game.
