Five people are recovering from one of two early morning house fires in Roanoke.

Crews responded to a blaze at 1330 Thomason Road Southeast at about 4:40 and quickly brought the flames under control.
A 36-year old man was taken to UVA Burn Center with burns to over 60-percent of his body. A man and woman in their sixties and two children were taken to the hospital to be treated for a combination of injuries including first and second degree burns and smoke inhalation. The fire was contained to an upstairs bedroom. Damage is estimated at thirty thousand dollars.

Earlier this morning, crews responded to an accidental electrical fire at 1812 10-th Street Northwest. Two people were home at the time of the 2 a.m. blaze. They were not injured but emergency crews say 8 or 9 cats and dogs died in the fire. Three dogs were rescued. The home is considered a total loss.

The dangerous West Nile virus is on the move-- with suspected cases reported from Florida to Washington state.
In our area, a dead crow found in Patrick County has tested positive for the virus.
But today, it's Louisiana that's feeling the brunt of the West Nile epidemic.

The Afghan commander claims the attackers were Arabs and Pakistanis, but that hasn't been confirmed.
Yesterday, U-S troops killed four men who reportedly fired at them nearly 90 miles north-east of Kabul.

The defense is about to wrap up closing arguments, disputing claims that physical evidence links Westerfield to the murder of seven- year- old Danielle Van Dam.

Last night, Roanoke Police sponsored activities at seven locations. The ideas is to support anti-crime activities in hopes that the community can help fight crime in their area. The world's largest cell phone maker says it's trimming its workforce--
Nokia has announced it'll cut about 900 jobs in its networks divison.
The division employs 19- thousand people around the world.
The cuts come as the demand for wireless equipment is dropping.
Company officials say the job cuts should be completed by the end of the year.

Republican Ken Cuccinelli won yesterday's special election in Fairfax County's 37th District.

In another special election, Democrat Kenneth Alexander won a vacant House of Delegates seat in Norfolk.
Democrat Jerrauld Jones quit that post to become executive director of the Department of Juvenile Justice.

((Kevin McCadam was signed by Atlanta on June 19th after being drafted in the fifth round as the 148th overall pick. His heart seems to still be in Blacksburg. A feeling never more evident than when he is asked about his former head coach Frank Beamer and the recent release of his bubble head doll. ((:))
